Failure of one-way change

Letter April 03, 2012
The decision-makers in the DHA need to consult those who are most affected by such decisions.

KARACHI: The decision of the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) to make Khayaban-e-Shamsheer a one-way road going down to Seaview, and Khayaban-e-Mujahid one-way coming from Seaview to Khayaban-e-Hafiz, is ill-conceived and poorly planned. It seems that common sense completely deserted those who took the decision as both Khayaban-e-Shamseer and Khayaban-e-Mujahid are residential areas and people need easy access to their homes.

The decision-makers in the DHA need to consult those who are most affected by such decisions before they are implemented. In its typical dictatorial style, this meaningless change was imposed by the authority on the general public using these roads without giving any prior warning. This has led to this decision being rejected as people often do not adhere to the one-way rule, which in turn increases the risk of accidents.

Instead of reviewing this seriously flawed decision, the DHA remains oblivious to criticism and advice. I demand to know who is the DHA answerable to? Who has the authority to look into this chaotic situation and into the DHA affairs in general? I plead to the authorities concerned to take action before lives are lost due to this decision.
