MULTAN/ LAHORE: Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) officially condemned the US bounty on LeT founder Hafiz Saeed on Tuesday, terming it “another attack by the US government on Muslims and Islam”.
JuD spokesperson Yahya Mujahid said the United States had offered a $10 million bounty for the chief of Jamaatud Dawa, a charity wing of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), due to the Difa-e-Pakistan Council’s (DPC) strong resolve against the reopening of Nato supply routes through Pakistan, drone strikes in the country’s tribal badlands and trade with India.
Defending Hafiz Saeed and Hafiz Abdul Rahman Makki, described as LeT's second-in-command, Mujahid said the whole world was aware of their whereabouts since they were are not living in the forests, hills or caves.
“Hafiz Saeed and Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki are the most popular religious leaders of the motherland of Pakistan and their relief and religious activities are not hidden from anyone,” the JuD spokesperson said.
Mujahid went on to claim that the move by the US was politically motivated and it was evident who the US government was trying to gratify.
“Yes, the Americans wanted to please India and they did it.”
He went on to add that the DPC was fully aware of the conspiracies being hatched by the US, India and their allies against Pakistan’s sovereignty, adding that the move by the US to announce a bounty for Saeed indicated "the negative tactics being adopted by them in frustration of their ulterior motives and plans being foiled by the DPC".
Mujahid vowed that the JuD and the DPC would defend Pakistan and play a pivotal role in the fight against foreign elements meddling in the country’s affairs, adding that even though Saeed hadn’t been distressed by the US’ negative tactics, their actions would further stoke anti-American sentiment in Pakistan.
Religious parties extend support to Saeed
Condemning the US bounty on Saeed, leaders of different religious parties in Pakistan said the JuD chief is a hero of Pakistan and allegations against him were in fact allegations against the Muslim Ummah and the country.
The leaders of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam- Samiul Haq (JUI-S), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Dawat Ahl-e-Hadees, Majlis Ahrar-e-Islam, International Khatam-e-Nabuwat and Jamiat-e-Ahl-e-Hadees criticised the US move.
JUI-F senior leader Khursheed Abbas Gardezi said that this step by the US will only generate hatred amongst millions of Muslims all over the world. He said, “an attack on Saeed is an attack on Islam and Muslims countries will retaliate in this case soon.”
Bashing India for the US announcement, JI senior leader Ashraf Ali said that India was waiting for this moment. “We would like to tell India and the US that Saeed and Makki are not hidden anywhere and have been serving Muslims openly. The JuD welfare activities can be witnessed by everyone and both the leaders will continue to serve the people of Pakistan and Muslim ummah,” he said.
A JUI-S senior leader added that Saeed was not a criminal and had never been a part of any terrorist activity. “The US is only serving Indian interests and if it dares to arrest Saeed, it will have to present proofs” he stated.
Calling Saeed the most favourite religious and social leader of Pakistan, International Khatam-e-Nabuwat leader Ismaeel Shujabaad said he is equally respected across the Muslim world.
Senior leader of Majlis Ahrar-e-Islam Kafeel Bukhari said that despite opposition and allegations, Saeed will not stop opposing drone attacks and Nato supply via Pakistan.
An Jamiat-e-Ahl-e-Hadees leader said that the LeT founder, along with JuD, has been struggling for the sovereignty, respect and integrity of Pakistan. “We will support him till our death,” he said.
Praising Saeed for leading a movement against India’s cruelty, ASWJ leaders offered to provide protection to him. “We will not let India become Pakistan’s most favoured nation in any case,” he added.

WASHINGTON: US State Department spokesperson Mark Toner says the $10 million is a “sweetener” for people to come forward and give evidence against Hafiz Saeed. He added that the US was maintaining close contact with India over the issue.
Addressing a press briefing on Thursday, he said that Saeed was basking in the media attention,”he is hiding in plain sight”, said the State Department spokesperson.
When asked if the notice would impact President Zardari’s upcoming visit to India, in light of groups like Difa-ePakistan Council protesting the visit, Toner said that the US hoped that it would not have an impact, adding that it was a win-win situation, for the US, if Pakistan and India were engaged in dialogue.
When asked if the US was trying to split the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) by placing a bounty on Saeed, the State Department spokesperson said that they were not playing a strategic game and wanted someone to come forward, providing evidence.
He added that it was the US’ conviction that Saeed was responsible for the Mumbai attacks, since in the past the LeT had carried out attacks on the Srinagar Airport, a hotel in Kabul, the Indian Parliament and on a train in India.
Toner mentioned that the US was in close contact with the Indian Government over the Saeed notice.

USA has always favored Pakistan as against India who has been aligned to Russia. In war of 1971, USA had even sent its fleet to help Pakistan fight India. (I remember my film Anand was released that year) USA has always been a better friend of PAK than of IND.
First of all, Hafiz Saeed (as far as I know) is a great guy who is genuinely concerned about Pakistan's well being. I believe in our courts and if they say he's good I believe them We're being humiliated internationally and it's our fault for being so weak. Why are we so weak? As a Muslim I believe it's because we have left our Islamic roots and are moving towards secularism. A bounty on Hafiz Saeed is an attack on Islam because the US is attacking a Muslim who has not been convicted by any (reliable) court of law. If your a Muslim --> You believe Islam is the one true religion and that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was the best of all mankind--> You would want a society based on Islamic teachings of morality and based on instructions on how to run a state by the Prophet (PBUH). Hafiz Saeed is a Pakistani citizen and it's the duty of the govt. to protect him. There is no reaction from the govt. so far, surprisingly.

The biggest threat that the US faces from the non state actors within Pakistan is from the Lashkar e Taiyaba, after the fading away of Al Qaida. One could give it new names which may sound less threatening but in the end it is another face of the same evil organization, dedicated to murdering women and children in order to prove its point that they can attack Indian soil at will. There is increasing evidence suggesting that the LeT is going to be the next great terror outfit against US interests emanating from the area. Those controlling the strings of the LeT should know that they are taking huge risks of inviting disproportionate relaliation from the US led West, and turning Pakistan into a pariah state like Iran and North Korea. The choice is quite clear to Pakistanis they should not be misled into actions that on the surface may sound nationalism but deep inside serve the interests of a small coterie of people sitting in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, who think that the use of a terror network for their interests is not in line with the interests of the people of Pakistan. Terrorists, on the other hand, deliberately go after civilian targets with the intention to maximize casualties and spread terror in the general population (hence the "terrorist" moniker). The Mumbai attacks, courtesy of Hafiz Saeed and his cohorts, were carried out against civilians. That makes him a terrorist, not a saboteur. Is Hafiz Saeed a "de facto" terrorist? Well, every story has "two sides!" And in politics, the "terrorist" of one side, is the "hero' of the other side! That's why the U.S., Europe, and Israel see Palestinians as "terrorists," while all Muslims and the rest of the world sees them as victims and heroes. China's founder Mao Zedong has been labeled as "terrorist" during China's civil war by the U.S. puppet regime of Chiang Kai-Shek, and he started the "long march" North to avoid assassination that eventually ended in his victory. Hafiz Saeed is a terrorist. He may have managed to evade conviction in a sham court proceeding in Pakistan, but that doesn't make him innocent. He does not represent Muslims. The extremist groups which are shielding him have hijacked religion to hide their gutter beliefs. USA has declared bounty for Hafiz's successful capture or prosecution, not killing. This was a direct result of collecting evidence that LeT engineered 26/11 in Mumbai in which many US CITIZENS were murdered. They now have clinching and clear evidence with voice samples. USA and Israel always keep the cases in which any of its citizens is murdered, open and keep collecting the evidence until a successful capture and prosecution is completed. Hafiz can run but cannot hide. Sooner or later

Your idea of using international courts is interesting. This way, at least one stands better chances of fair trial on both sides. Has that happened before - an individual being taken to international courts for an act of terrorism against a country? I can't recall.
Pakistan should think that this move from US comes, when Zardari is set to visit India on comming Sunday. Zardari's sudden visit to India shows that something is cooking. Pak court has already acquitted Hafiz Saeed and there is no evidence that he was involved in drama attacks. Pak foregin office should condemn this move, as India is hailing it. A change is needed in Pakistan, so now we have to change our fater by casting our vote to the clean parties. Honest leadership can only do work in public and country's interest. Nato supply should never be restored as it will invite the Taliban to destroy our peace once again. Negotiate with them and Army should mend their ways.
