FAISALABAD:

Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) Judge Ishtiaq Ahmed on Thursday sentenced a woman lawyer to death on three counts for the abduction and murder of a teenager who was also her student.

The court also sentenced two other accused, including her brother, to life in prison on three counts.

Bilal, 16, son of local trader Javed and a student of class 10, left his home in Satellite Town for tuition on November 17, 2011, but did not return home. According to the prosecution Advocate Ishrat Naheed, who lived nearby, invited Bilal into her home and drugged and detained him. She was assisted by her brother Muhammad Nasir Iqbal and Adeel Arshad, said the prosecution.

Bilal’s father Javed was sent a message on his mobile phone seeking Rs3.5 million for his release. He agreed to pay Rs3 million and was directed to deposit the money in a dustbin at the Orthopaedic Ward of the District Headquarters Hospital. He did not inform the police about the kidnapping.

Prosecutors said that Bilal was never released. Shortly after the ransom payment, his body was found packed in a bag in the Rakh Branch Canal near Kahna Bridge, in Dijkot police jurisdiction. He had been strangled to death.

The court found the accused guilty on the basis of witness statements and other evidence. It also ordered the confiscation of all their property and fined them an additional Rs200,000.
