RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Railways will receive around eight newly overhauled locomotives by the end of this month, Divisional Superintendent Railways Munawar Shah said on Wednesday.

“Pakistan Railways has repaired 40 locomotives with its own resources and has the capacity to repair around eight engines every month subject to the availability of spare parts and funds,” he told APP. Out of the repaired engines, around 20 locomotives will be used for freight services to generate income, he said.

He also revealed that Pakistan Railways has completed dualisation of the Lodhran-Sahiwal track, while dualisation of the Raiwind-Sahiwal section is underway. Completion of this project will help reduce travelling time between Lahore and Karachi, he said.

Around 55 modern coaches from China have also arrived in the country which will be attached to different trains after completing required tests. “Among these, 12 are air-conditioned business class coaches, one AC sleeper, 31 economy class, five power vans, four brake vans and two are dining cars,” official sources in the Pakistan Railways said.

They said that 147 more coaches will be prepared in the Islamabad Carriage Factory by Railway engineers at a cost of Rs17 billion. The sources said coaches are prepared using modern techniques and are equipped with almost every facility.
