HARIPUR:

A newly-wed girl was killed under unexplained circumstances in Ghazi tehsil on Monday.

Mumtaz Ahmed, a resident of Qazipur village told the police that he married his daughter Anam Bibi, 16, to Yasir Ali, who belonged to the same village, three months ago.

Shortly after the marriage, her husband went to Saudi Arabia and her in-laws made life difficult for his daughter.

They used to subject her to domestic violence on one pretext or the other, her father said.

“Whenever she complained of the unjust behaviour of her in-laws, I would persuade her to try to settle in with them as she had to spend her life with them,” he added.

On Sunday afternoon, Anam’s father-in-law Mirza Khan and brother-in-law Saqib beat her with sticks and kicked her around, resulting in severe injuries.

When she collapsed and fell unconscious, the father and son took her to some hospital in Rawalpindi without informing her parents.

Anam, however, succumbed to the injuries and died on the way to hospital, said the complainant.

The father lodged an FIR with the police accusing the victim’s father- in-law and brother-in-law of murdering his daughter.

The police have registered a criminal case against Anam’s in-laws and started investigations.

Meanwhile, sources have disclosed that there was a possibility the girl had committed suicide by swallowing sleeping pills after she could no longer endure the violence unleashed by her father-in-law and brother-in-law.
