GILGIT:

Following a deadlock in negotiations with the government, lecturers and professors in Gilgit will launch a protest movement in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) from Sunday for acceptance of their longstanding demands.

“In the first phase starting from Sunday, all lecturers and professors will wear black armbands.”

Ishtiaq Ahmed, a representative of Gilgit-Baltistan Professors and Lecturers Association (G-BPLA) told reporters in Gilgit on Saturday.

Protesting faculty members have also called for the establishment of an independent examination board in G-B.

As a precondition to call off the strike, G-BLPA had presented a charter of demands, including promotions and new appointments against vacancies in the Directorate of Education. After the token strike that will end on March 30, they will boycott classes till their demands are accepted. Professors and lecturers from seven districts will take part in the boycott, disrupting higher education.
