Press club: 18 sent to jail pending trial

A judicial magistrate of the Rail Bazaar police station on Wednesday sent all 18 people, arrested for shooting and injuring journalists at the Faisalabad Press Club on Sunday, to the District Jail on a 14-day judicial remand. The police did not seek extension in the.

Ahmad Gulzar, Adeel Qamar, Irfan Haidar, Mohsin Ali, Muhammad Ilyas, Imran Ali, Ishtiaq Ahmad, Muhammad Shehzad, Asif Ali, Abdur Rauf, Rauf Rehman, Amanullah, Malik Asif, Saif Ali, Muhammad Usman, Sajjad Haidar, Khawar Abbas and MS Shehzad, the accused, were arrested on Sunday from the FPC premises after they shot at some journalists causing injuries to 14 people. The injured were taken to a hospital, where they were reported to be out of danger.


Station House Officer Ali Akhtar said that the FPC elections were scheduled for March 12. He said a group of journalists had wanted a postponement. They had tried to get a restraining order from the High Court, but failed.

He speculated that the shooting happened at the behest of this group.
