KARACHI: The Oscar that every Pakistani was immensely proud of finally reached Pakistan early morning on Saturday.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the Pakistani filmmaker who recently won an Oscar for her film Saving Face, shared her proud moments at a press conference in Karachi.
Reminiscing the golden moments of receiving the Oscar, Sharmeen said that she felt like a star at the ceremony and narrated how her heart stopped when the announcer fumbled a little after saying “and the winner is…”
“When I heard the name of Saving Face, at first I thought I was repeating the name myself. It was only when Daniel [co-director of Saving Face] got up to receive the award, then I felt that 'Yes, we have won'.
There is no other feeling I can describe, it was the most incredible feeling ever.”
Sharmeen was so awe-struck at bagging the world’s most precious award that she cannot remember what exactly happened after she got on the stage. “I recalled what I had said in my speech only after I watched it on TV.”
With the golden statue placed in front of the stage, Sharmeen excitedly told the audience how the statue serves as a pass for events that happen that night. “It is the greatest feeling in the world... You just show your Oscar and that will be your pass.”

American audiences were delighted to watch this mini masterpiece from Pakistan and many were discussing the issue of violence against women. Majority did not see it as a Pakistan problem but a world problem. An interesting review that seem to jump out that Bollywood with all it's technical advantages seems more focus on non social issues & most Americans feel India seems to whitewash these social issues so that sex motivated subjects & denial with trying to copy Hollywood was their main agenda. There is great hope that Pakistani Cinema will produce more independent creative subjects than the usual thrash that Lollywood puts out & talent like Sharmeen will entice a new genre that Americans are anxiously waiting to discover of a land that has been presented to them in a tainted lens.

Kudos to Sharmeen for winning the Oscar but the award seems to be diverting attention away from the extremely shameful acts that are documented in her film. Let this attention be channeled into eradicating this scourge of acid attacks from our society. It is inhuman and repugnant to commit this crime. Laws should be changed so that associated punishment fits the crime.
