MULTAN:

As the demand for new provinces becomes shriller, the prime minister has come strongly in favour of a Seraiki province in Punjab, rejecting opposition from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

“There will soon be a Seraiki province,” the premier told a gathering in Multan – the constituency from where his son Ali Moosa Gilani won by-election. “All conspiracies against a Seraiki province will be foiled by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) which will fight for the rights of the people,” he added.

He lashed out at the PML-N chief and his party, saying that the ‘rulers of Lahore’ only sent officials to the region to address people’s problems in a perfunctory manner, rather than making local representatives to come up with solutions. “While the people in the Seraiki belt only ask for their rights, they are treated like enemies by those in Lahore,” the PM said and vowed that the proposed Seraiki province would be self-reliant and would not ask for any financial help from any other province.

The premier also took the opportunity to voice his criticism of former PPP stalwart and present Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Vice President Shah Mahmood Qureshi – who previously held the NA-148 seat.

“The PPP tried its best to retain Qureshi but he had only demanded designations and ministries,” Gilani said and claimed that Qureshi owed his political standing to his (PM’s) support.

He rejected the allegations of rigging the NA-148 by-election, saying that Ali Moosa had received 93,000 votes. He added that his son’s victory was accepted by PPP’s opponents and even Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had personally congratulated him on his triumph.

Referring to development projects in the country, Prime Minister Gilani claimed that no other government could compare to the incumbent one in this regard.

Earlier in the day, the premier addressed a gathering of flood victims in Muzaffargarh after distributing the keys of 143 houses for rehabilitation.

Later, the prime minister issued a Rs10 million grant to the Muzaffargarh Press Club at the request of Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar. He also announced that the area, previously affected by floods, will undergo renovation on its dykes and embankments. Two new dykes are also to be around the town, he said.

Why did PPP take the anti democratic step of abolishing local govts?

While I don't know enough about it to really judge things, I just realized, Pakistan is the only country that uses the word conspiracy for at least one aspect or another for every single problem it has. It's beginning to look a little... insane.
