QUETTA: Balochistan Home Secretary Naseebullah Bazai has formally criticised the performance of paramilitary Frontier Corps and police in the violence-hit province.

“I did not see police and FC personnel in Quetta during my late night visit to the city on February 16. They were not on duty,” Bazai wrote in his formal letter to FC and police on Thursday.

Bazai was accompanied by Quetta’s deputy inspector-general and Quaidabad police SP on his visit to the provincial capital, where kidnappings for ransom and target killings are rampant.

“The home department has directed the FC and police to improve their performance, which is not up to the mark, and ensure protection of lives and property of the people,” a home department official said on condition of anonymity.

Earlier, during a surprise visit to Quetta, Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani had suspended ten policemen for negligence. Raisani had also criticised the FC and police for poor performance directed both law enforcement agencies to improve their performance.

The Frontier Corps, which is responsible for border security in Balochistan, is also deployed in most districts. Recently, FC was deployed on the RCD Highway near Mastung and Kalat due to increasing incidents of highway holds up and robberies.

Police are responsible for maintaining public order in urban areas of the province which, according to Balochistan police, comprises eight to nine per cent of the province. Balochistan Constabulary is deployed in rural areas.
