LAHORE: A man convicted of murdering his mother because she wouldn’t give him money to leave the country was sentenced to death by Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Javaidul Hassan Chishti on Monday. Sheraz Butt had been found guilty of slitting his mother’s throat after she turned down his request for Rs1 million so he could go abroad. The complainant in the case was Shahnawaz Butt, the convict’s father. He had told the court that he was standing outside his house in Ichhra police jurisdiction with some relatives on January 28, 2008, when he heard his wife screaming. They went inside and saw Sheraz taking a knife to her throat, he said. Sheraz fled the scene and later threatened his father and other relatives too, Shahnawaz said. Sheraz, who holds an FSc diploma, was also fined Rs1 million. If he fails to pay that amount he will have six months added to his sentence.
