Uzbek man pleads guilty to planning Obama assassination

Published: February 11, 2012

Kodirov was arrested in July at an Alabama motel after buying an automatic weapon from an undercover agent - for terror plans including assassinating Obama.

ALABAMA: A man from Uzbekistan living illegally in the United States has pleaded guilty on Friday to terrorism and weapons charges involving threats to kill President Barack Obama.

Defendant Ulugbek Kodirov, 22, pleaded guilty in US District Court in Birmingham, Alabama, to three charges as part of an agreement that spares him from a potential life sentence.

Kodirov is to be sentenced on May 17 and still faced up to 15 years in prison for providing material support for terrorist activity, up to 10 years for being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm and up to five years for threatening to assassinate the president.

Four other charges against him were dropped, and mainly involved additional threats to kill Obama. Details of the threats have not been released.

Kodirov was arrested in July at an Alabama motel after buying an automatic weapon from an undercover agent. Prosecutors said he came to the United States in 2009, but his student visa was revoked in April 2010 after he failed to enroll in school.

    Is he entitled for American Green Card after spending 25-30 years in US (jails)?

    @Somy.

    Is he entitled for American Green Card
    after spending 25-30 years in US
    (jails)?

    If he is it will be limited to Guantanamo Bay only. What amazes me is how/why the USA ever allowed him a student visa when he hadn’t enrolled in any college program? The USA needs to do a better job at screening people who enter their country.

    @somy:
    He wouldn’t get the green card. Had he one already, he would be deported upon leaving jail.

    How come the U.S. authorities hadn’t disclosed more about the alleged plan to assassinate Obama? Was the convicted planning to act on his own or was he linked to any terror cell?
