ISLAMABAD/KARACHI:

President Asif Ali Zardari has confirmed the appointment of three additional judges for the High Court of Sindh, a move that comes at a time when there is an extreme shortage.

The three names are Justice Muhammad Tasnim, Justice Syed Hassan Azhar Rizvi and Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar. The list was approved by the judicial commission and unanimously agreed upon by a parliamentary committee. The president approved the names on the prime minister’s advice.

Spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said that the president also confirmed a one-year extension for Justice Nisar Muhammad Sheikh as an additional judge of the Sindh High Court.

The SHC has been working with only 12 judges, the lowest ever strength in recent history, even though it is supposed to have 40.

With the induction of new judges, the shortage crisis at the Sindh High Court will be over this month, said SHC Chief Justice Mushir Alam while addressing a ceremony on Friday afternoon to hand over 49 new Toyota Corolla cars to district and sessions judges, additional district and sessions judges and judges of 11 Anti-Terrorism Courts in Sindh.

A list of judges for the lower judiciary has been sent to the chief minister whose approval is awaited.

He appreciated the Sindh government for providing funds for much needed vehicles for the judges.
