KARACHI:

The doctors and paramedical staff of two government-run hospitals blocked Shahrah-e-Pakistan on Thursday, in protest against a delay in their salaries.

The employees organised the protest after the government failed to pay them for four months.

The protest was called off after the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) Municipal Commissioner Matanat Ali Khan handed over checks of Rs8.8 million to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Rs7.4 million to the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases.

The protesters also asked KMC to give contract employees working at the hospitals permanent jobs. KMC has issued a statement that doctors and paramedic staff will receive salaries in the first week of every month and the process for giving them permanent jobs has also started.

KMC has said that it is strapped for cash otherwise.
