KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari said on Friday that he has always asked world leaders to “teach us [Pakistan] how to fish rather than giving us a fish.”
Zardari was speaking in Karachi at the inauguration ceremony of Waseela-e-Haq-Sindh program. He said that during his meetings with international players, he talked about “trade and not aid.”
Speaking about the currency swap arrangement with Russia, China and Turkey, Zardari said he convinced countries to trade with Pakistan in local currency.
“My own state bank, however, was sceptical about the idea because it has the mindset of getting aid and preventing new approach,” he said.
BISP to create new middle class
According to the President, the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) will help raising the living standard of poor people and will create a new middle class.
“I was told that there are people who had earlier received money through BISP and are now in a position to return that amount,” Zardari said.

Mr. President,
The world has no time and resources to give you fish or teach you how to fish. We will have to do it ourselves. Sooner YOU realize it, better it would be.

Do u know what is it called vision? u think vision is making no policy for power sector in 4 years? destroying the railways? embarrassing people at international airports through PIA? Lay down of pakistan steel? Closure of pakistans textile sector? Simply not finding some one with any sense of economic in whole of pakistan? Finding and Appointing the most corrupt ppl across the country and giving then key posts? Making a mockery of Supreme court of pakistan? Giving amnesty to criminals just because they are ur allies? Giving control of foreign policy practically to army by appointing an amateurForeign minister? forcing 30% of pakistans middle class to join already flourishing lower class?
“If allowed”? what do you mean? who stopped mr zardari for acting in favor of pakistani nation? Who restrained him for doing good deeds? who placed obstacles to make good economic policies?
He is corrupt with no moral values, non visionary and dull minded statesman and product of a fluke who has achieved nothing in life at his own through fair means. If anything plz let me know.Recommend

@Maryam, this “great visionary leader” has been in power three times and all three times he has been a miserable failure. How many more chances does this “visionary leader” needs? This time around he had four years to govern this country, can you point out as to what has he done in these four years? Has he been stopped from good governance and good policy making by the army or the courts? I will tell you what this guy has been doing for the last four years. Amassing his massive wealth which now stands at $3 billion, making him the richest Pakistani. Nawaz Sharif is not far behind. Both of these guys are not officially on Forbes list which tells you that they acquired their money through “other” means. Pakistan is the only country in the world where poor people go to jail after a petty theft whereas the rich sit in the President houseRecommend
@ antony I think eiher you misread the statement of President or totally misunderstood the msg. We Pakistani are habitual of relying on aid, and for aid sake we go flat before American, in last ten years we gave them air bases we allowed them to carry out drone attacks, against our own ppl we sold them ppl like Aafia siddidi and many other missing ppl, My President know we cannot go on like this, though ppl accused him for repercussions of Musharruf’s policies, but he did not try to shift blame on Army. He only wants Pakistan should be given excess to world’s trade centers. Why should he be ashamed?? countries you mentioned are democratic govt, they believe in democracy, they bring change through electoral process, their judiciary, army, and media, do not undermine people’s power. If this democracy continues we will learn how to fish. As a nation we are so impatient, we want to get prosperity so quickly, we don’t even bother whether our dictators brought it by compromising our sovereignty.

The President was definitely given the time to prove his vision, and mission. Sadly, he lost it, he lost all the time. Do not put it on Judiciary or Opposition. The current-regime, which is led by Pakistan Peoples’ Party, whose co-Chairman is President Asif Ali Zardari, has been functioning very inadequately, to put it lightly. This is the result you get, when instead of institutionalizing the structure, playing politics is a preference. The PIA, Pakistan Railways, energy-crisis, creeping economy, gas-crisis, Steel Mill deficit, all are shouting at the top of their voices about the “legacy” of Mr. President, and his party. I personally think that the current government has done its best, best at making sure that not a single stone is left unturned to prove their meager governance. I don’t think it is because they are all a bunch of incompetent people out there who have absolutely no idea of what is going on, rather it is because many are giving preference to their selves by sacrificing the layman. And this is heinous! They are sensible enough to understand that we do not need near 100 ministries, both because of the sky-rocketing expenses, and expanded communication gaps within one field. Yet, they do all this. Enough corruption scandals, enough destruction of institutions, enough of their “democracy”! To get things straight is not difficult, what it needs is commitment, motivation, sincerity, and a BIG heart!Recommend
The world is ready to help and invest in Pakistan. BUT-if business leaders come to Pakistan-ALL of them know they WILL not return back. So who CAN teach Pakistanis how to catch fish?
Every other street has mullah influenced threatening muslims and EVEN the leftover 1% non-muslims. This will not change until Pakistan cleans itself from its image. People trade with cultures that are tolerant and respectful. Thats the bottomline -not money always. Life matters more. There is only so much India or even bigbrother China can do (Chinese aready left some projects..) when mullahs rule the minds of 99% Pakistanis.
MFN status will work only if Indian businessmen like the society of Pakistan. This will never happen under current circumstances. Therefore India will export nonhuman dealing stuff and Pakistan will also export nonhuman dealing stuff which will not benefit the failed economy of Pakistan. As long as Pakistan sees itself as muslim nation, this situation will not improve but will get worse -as we are seeing for last 20 years.Recommend

Deja vu! Does someone remember “Qaraz utaro, mulk sanwaro”? And what happened to the money that a lot of good hearted Pakistanis donated? We have been hearing this from our leaders for the last 64 years. For one “Pakistan iss waqt nazak halaat se guzar raha hai”, and that we should reduce reliance on foreign aid. Thus far, neither one has been done. Zardari, Sharif brothers and the likes need to bring their own money home first. And by the way, it is not these foreign governments giving you the fish. You have been begging for it. In order to survive in the long run Pakistan needs foreign investment and not loans. How secure would you feel about investing money in a country where everyone, inside or out of the government, live in the present day?

@Arjun Shetty: I have my friends from India, we even worked together in past. I tell you two sided fact of the history. Your country and politics also take huge bounties from kick backs. Ours does as well. The good things are to talk about here… I take one good point from India. The education system. That has invested on your masses in last 20-30 years and now you folks groomed out well.
Unfortunately, here the story is changed because, our politics were too much self centred to their interests than the common man. Education funds were cut down to fill the pockets of Defence and other valueless programs. Last but not the least, AID and Loans (IMF) damaged us badly.
And yes, we should not overrule that Soviet-Afghan war caused “Pakistan” all the loss and no gain in last 4 decades.

I strongly believe that most us usually comment with little knowledge or perhaps what ever we see apparently, Especially through the eyes of the media. And media sell its product by all means. I believe our problem is of change, who is going to bring about the changes, change has to by change agents like in any firm, corporation or organization. For Pakistan as an organization or from the perspective of any organization has to have an environment for system to develop. Unfortunately, even our most accomplished, organized and systematic force has not been able to force out evils from our country’s old system. “Old habits die hard” we need to eradicate old habits of the system which is like virus or even cancer. We all know that cancer is only curable at initial stage.Throughout history, we see nations suffer a lot and yet survive. We optimistically we shall all vote for its well being. If all is so bad about Zardari and its PPP, Then we should have little patience for the next election. PPP has also previously been accused and removed from power, but what happened every time after they left, not only Muslim League Nawaz, but also Muslim League Q along with Musharaf have come; what impact they had on country, more or less same as PPPs. Lets hope Imran Khan and his fans see the success, but impact would not be much different; slide incremental change, we need drastic change, that iz also holistically. For that we need good and effective change agents, but our system does not incubators to produce noble people and it discourages such change believe We need to be good, so that ALLAH sends us good and sincere Leaders.Recommend
