Violence continues: Man critically injured by gunmen

The incident occurred in Basin, about 15 kilometres from Gilgit.

After a brief lull in target killings in Gilgit, armed men struck again on Thursday, critically injuring a man in the city’s suburbs, according to the police and witnesses.


Armed men opened fire on Tajir Hussain, who was immediately taken to district headquarters hospital, where he was stated to be in critical condition. The incident occurred in Basin, about 15 kilometres from Gilgit. The police have registered a case and started an investigation.

The first incident of firing in a week, it triggered panic amongst the town’s residents, who feared a renewal of tension between rival sects.

More than a dozen persons have been killed or injured in the recent past in Gilgit. The police claimed to have arrested the suspected killers of a police official in Gilgit, but murderers of most of the other victims have not been traced.

Target killing has resulted in major protests by an already charged people who have taken to the streets on several occasions.
