ISLAMABAD:

The city police arrested a constable for negligence on Saturday after a suspected thief managed to escape from Ramna Police Station.

Muhammad Amir, the suspect, was arrested earlier and was on physical remand with the police. He was to be produced before the court on Saturday, police said.

According to a police official on duty at the time of the incident, Constable Amir Farooq took the suspect to a lavatory outside the lockups, as the washroom inside was out of order.

Meanwhile, a police official fell unconscious, which diverted the constable’s attention. Taking advantage of the situation, the suspect managed to flee from the police station. A search operation was launched as soon as the police found out about the incident, but the suspect was not arrested till last reports came in.

When the case was reported to the SHO, he ordered Farooq’s arrest and a case to be registered against him for negligence, said a police official. The police official who went unconscious is also being investigated for his involvement in the incident; however, he hasn’t been arrested so far.
