RAWALPINDI:

Over 60 colleges in Rawalpindi division will be affected as teachers go on an indefinite strike from Monday to push the Punjab government to revise their service structure and regularise contractual employees.

The call for the strike was given by the Punjab Professors and Lecturers Association (PPLA), said a press statement.

The teachers have been pushing for promotions on the timescale formula, implementation of one step up-gradation of every professor and lecturer as promised in 2005 and regularisation of contractual lecturers.

According to the timescale formula, a lecture recruited in BPS-17 is promoted to BPS-18 after eight years in service, BPS-19 after seven more years and BPS-20 after an additional six years of service.

“All teachers in Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal and Jehlum districts will start observing a complete boycott of classes from Monday and the strike will continue till the acceptance of the demands,” said PPLA Rawalpindi Division President Muhammad Ilyas Qureshi.

In a press statement, the representative for college teachers said they would also protest against the Higher Education Department’s plan to terminate teachers who are part of the protest.

Qureshi added that the provincial government had earlier promised to promote teachers who had been waiting for promotions, but the plan was dropped few weeks ago.

“Most recently, the government asked for applications for lecturer posts on contract through the Punjab Public Service Commission. It is first time that lecturers are being hired on contract basis through PPSC, which is against the rules and regulations,” said Ilyas Qureshi.

Rawalpindi Division Colleges Director Dr Muhammad Ashraf said that the teachers’ demands can only be negotiated on by the Punjab government and teachers’ representatives.
