Fooling the media

Letter January 13, 2012
Story of this fraudster got published in the mainstream print media should be a cause for worry.

ISLAMABAD: The story of how a man by the name of Shamsul Anawar, whose name means “the Sun of Lights”, fooled two national newspapers (including yours) into publishing stories to the effect that his daughter had been kidnapped for ransom, is yet another reflection of the darkness that is creeping in our society. That the story of this fraudster got published in the mainstream print media should be a cause for worry because readers presume that basic fact checking is done before such stories are published.

If the media starts propagating falsehood, then where will ordinary citizens go to find the truth?
