ISLAMABAD:

Contrary to popular belief, women’s laws have played a pivotal role in protecting women from injustice and violence. This was the crux of a discussion titled “Women Act-Implementation Challenges,” at The South Asian Free Media Association centre on Thursday.

Speakers stressed that police and judiciary should be sensitised about women-related issues and laws so as so to aid effective implementation.

While commenting on the high rate of violence in domestic areas, Samina Nazir, a women rights activist, said “Women in rural areas should be educated about their rights and laws that are being made for their protection.”

“There is a need to understand these laws at grassroots level,” said Samar Minallah, another women rights activist. She added that there is a common misconception that the women-related laws have brought no change in the society. “In fact, they have greatly helped in providing justice to many innocent girls and women and saving their lives,” she said.

Fouzia Shahid, a journalist, said the laws have helped in changing the crass language which was used in the parliament for women and bills related to them.
