Make-up & style hallmarks: Who’s trendy now?

Highlighting make-up and style hallmarks that made a mark in 2011.

Asmaa Mumtaz proudly sticks out like a stylish totem because of her vibrant persona and her bold make-up and styling. The proof of this is the dexterity with which she created dark edgy looks for Karma’s bridals at the PFDC L’Oreal Paris Bridal Week 2011, with as much ease as she managed to conjure up feminine innocence at Karma Pink’s PFDC Fashion Week 2011 collection.

What is your signature bridal look for 2012?

I am a strong believer in minimal make-up on your wedding day. Pakistani clothes and jewellery are usually so heavily embellished that it’s important to keep the face free of unnecessary clutter. As a rule, foundation should be kept minimal and colour should be strategically used so that it highlights the bride’s best feature, be it the eyes, lips or cheekbones, and spend time on making the skin look dewy and fresh, as well as camera and light friendly.

It’s all about going as natural and make-up free as possible. Even the trend of thicker, bolder eyebrows has made a comeback. Sleek hair has been replaced with deconstructive feel with worn out colour.  Use minimal concealer and foundation and keep cheeks flushed for freshness. Add a strong lip tint for extra oomph.

What is the inspiration behind these looks and why do you think this will be the ‘it’ look for 2012?

The inspiration is a good, healthy lifestyle, which, if followed properly, will reflect in every aspect of your life including hair, skin and nails. That ‘inner glow’ can only be achieved with good skin behaviour. Quick fix mineralise skin finishes etc can only do so much, and their effects are only temporary.

Toni and Guy is a global style brand with strong links with fashion. Given that internationally the brand is known for its funky hair dos, bridal make-up isn’t something that one would associate with creative director Shammal Qureishi’s portfolio. Yet at the PFDC L’ Oreal Paris Bridal Week, Toni and Guy managed to stand tall in that department for a look that was soft yet opulent.

What is your signature bridal look for 2012?

For 2012, I am expecting the traditional red bridal look to come back. In the make-up department, do not go for a caked look, keep it natural and take care of your skin prior to your wedding to get a natural glow. You have to choose a primary colour and one or two secondary colours. Don’t pick more than three, because it will make the colour palette tricky and look busy.

We will be going for classic, natural, minimalistic make-up in 2012. Women should look like themselves, instead of the same mass-produced brides with unconvincingly white skin.

Our latest look’s name is Greta Garbo and the it look will be an embodiment of style and ephemeral beauty, which is reminiscent of old Hollywood.

Ather and Shahzad have ruled the roost for make-up and fashion photography as the pioneers for decades. A whole generation of brides have grown up being influenced by their interpretation of the subcontinental bride.

The signature bridal look for the upcoming year includes dark eyes with lots of kohl and light lipstick.

We have two signature Ather Shahzad looks for 2012, apt for winter and summer season respectively. For winter, red lips, bare eyes and subtle base would seal the deal. During summers we recommend very little make-up, almost no base, glossy eyes and tied up hair.

The looks are inspired by our traditions, weather, time and occasion.

Redah Misbah is the heiress to the beauty giant Depilex. Long before the trend of chains of salons began,

Depilex was ‘the’ place to go for make-up and associated beauty treatments. Although fashion isn’t technically on the brand’s agenda, Misbah seeks to launch her own line of cosmetics soon.

The colour palette that international make-up artists are using is neutrals highlighted by punchy block colours these days. So a lot of nudes like dull golds and creamy fawns and champagnes with hints of bold colours like burnt orange, flame yellow, tangerine and petrol blue are advised.

We will be aiming to provide a whole spectrum of looks for the local market this year, keeping in mind international trends as well as the local demand, requirement and style.

What is the inspiration behind these looks and why do you think this will be the ‘it’ look for 2012?

Our latest look is the Laldit look. Our inspiration comes from a place that many have called ‘heaven on earth’ in regards to its beauty, people and hospitality; Kashmir. We wanted to capture the look that a typical bride from that region would have, with emphasis on natural features and inner beauty manifesting on the outside. The name Laldit comes from a female Kashmiri saint and 14th century poet of the region.
