Tribune Take: Attacks on telecom franchises - extortionists or militants?

Published: January 3, 2012

In today’s episode of the Tribune Take, we take a look at the recent attacks on franchises of telecommunication companies in Karachi.

Salman Siddiqui, Investigative Reporter for The Express Tribune, says that officials looking into the matter are baffled and have not been able to determine who could be the motive behind these attacks. He says no demands or claims for the attacks have come forward as yet.

Siddiqui says investigators were earlier convinced that a militant organisation could be behind the first attack, but after the recent attack on a local company there is a possibility that extortionists might be involved.

Terrorist often use extortion/kidnapping/drug smuggling as a means of funding their activities — it isn’t necessarily a question of extortionist vs militant.
