The 17th death anniversary of noted poet Parveen Shakir was observed here on Monday. Prominent literary figures lay floral wreaths on the grave of the late poet. Shakir, 42, was killed in a road accident on December 26, 1994.


She was a noted Urdu poet, teacher and a civil servant. She did her masters in English Literature and Linguistics from Karachi University, where she also served as professor and later joined civil service.  Her poetry was a breath of fresh air in Urdu poetry. The feminine perspective of love and the associated social problems were her theme. Her first book, Khushboo, won the Adamjee Award. Later, she was awarded the Pride of Performance award.
