Capacity building: Chinese institute to help PCRWR improve services

Researchers from China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research will train PCRWR scientists.

A Chinese institute will help the Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) improve its expertise and services.


Researchers from China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR), specialising in hydrologic modelling, remote sensing technology, water and waste water treatment etcetera, will train PCRWR scientists.

This was decided during the visit of IWRH Vice Chief Engineer of Department of Structure and Material Dr Feng Minghui to PCRWR Headquarters here on Saturday. Dr Feng Minghui had a detailed meeting with the Chairperson and Directors of the PCRWR and it was decided that the modalities of collaboration will be finalised through Pak-China Science and Technology Protocol.

PCRWR Chairperson Dr Muhammad Aslam Tahir sketched out the overall position of the water resources of the country with specific reference to the water quantity and quality situation.

IWHR is China’s largest research institute in the water sector with 13 research departments and five affiliated enterprises and was established in 1933 under the Ministry of Water Resources. It specialises in hydrology and water resources, water environment and ecology, flood control,drought relief and disaster reduction, soil and water conservation, river and lake management hydraulics, geotechnical engineering, earthquake engineering, hydro machinery and electrical equipment, renewable power resources, and remote sensing technology.

The Chinese guest also visited National Water Quality Laboratory of the council.
