ISLAMABAD: It is gracious of Asif Akhtar (“What the occupation of Wall Street means for Pakistan” – December 21) from his vantage point at the New School in New York City to warn us that the Occupy Wall Street movement may squeeze the US government to pull the plug on aid to Pakistan. By the way, the plug was pulled a year ago, as Pakistan has received zilch from the US, and is managing on its own.

Mengal’s timely warning
I’m not sure how you have reached that conclusion but the US did not stop aid to Pakistan last year and has still not stopped aid to Pakistan. They suspended $700M of military aid but humanitarian aid still continues. USAid has an official website which shows where all of the humanitarian aid has gone before someone starts the talking point that Pakistan did not receive anything from this aid. USAid has been used to help fund hospitals, schools and poverty alleviation projects in Pakistan. It doesn’t mean we have to be subservient to the US but let us at least appreciate what we have received (and continue to receive).
