Film fare: As Afaq walks free, MQM talks about Altaf documentary

Party wonders why there is so much negative reporting about it.

KARACHI:

As breakaway party member Afaq Ahmed was leaving the Central Jail, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was feting journalists at an event at the Lal Qila ground in Azizabad on Saturday.

The event was held to highlight a documentary on the MQM produced by Metro One TV channel.

The documentary, featuring archival footage and images of party founder and chief Altaf Hussain, describes his foray into politics as a student at Karachi University, the creation of the MQM and Hussain’s various arrests while he was in Pakistan.

MQM’s Deputy Convener Anis Qaimkhani, former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal, MPA Shoaib Bukhari, Dr Sagheer Ahmed and Coordination Committee member Wasay Jalil were at the event. Jalil said that the MQM appreciated the work and contributions made by journalists and has supported them, such as in the wage board case.

He said the documentary should inspire journalists to do research. In his speech, Kamal highlighted that even after 27 years and contesting nine elections, information about the MQM and Altaf Hussain was still often negative, which is why the party and its leader had to often clarify its position. “People believe that if there is extortion, the MQM must be involved,” he said, highlighting the spread of negative information about the party. “If everyone has information about the MQM allegedly earning money through extortion, despite nine years of governance, why does no one have information of us taking money from banks as loans and then having them written off?”

In order to point out that Hussain had not used the party to help his family, Kamal gave a few examples: Hussain’s sister still lives in a small house, and Anis Qaimkhani was the party’s deputy convener, and not Hussain’s brother.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating and not in making documentaries. People will believe what they see and experience.
