GILGIT:

The Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) government is planning to launch an FM radio channel in Gilgit to give people the latest updates on law and order in the city.

“The radio channel will instantly notify people if there is a law and order situation which will help them manage their affairs accordingly,” said G-B Home Secretary Asif Bilal on Saturday. “Currently newspapers are the only source of information. With the launch of the channel, people will be able to plan their activities in advance,” he added.

Briefing journalists on security measures for Muharram, the home secretary said over 100 imambargahs in the region have been declared sensitive and they have received minor security threats in Astore Valley. However, he claimed that
appropriate measures have been taken to counter security risks. “We have installed CCTV cameras at the main procession sites and troops will also be called in and will remain on standby,” he explained.

According to Assistant Inspector General Ali Sher, over 1,300 police officials, besides Rangers and scouts, have been deployed in the city to maintain foolproof security during the month of Muharram.

“We have also requested the federal government to provide sniper dogs to search sensitive areas,” he added. The capital city has been divided into 17 zones to ensure efficient management of security during Muharram.
