LAHORE: The Young Doctors Association (YDA) met Health Secretary Muhammad Jehanzeb Khan on Sunday and demanded the appointment of a permanent vice chancellor at King Edward Medical University (KEMU).

YDA officials briefed the health secretary on affairs at the university.

They also called for a King Edward Medical College, as the institution used to be known, with a principal within the university to improve undergraduate education. The institution was granted the status of a university in 2005.

The YDA officials said that the acting vice chancellor of the university simultaneously held four other offices: pro vice chancellor, director general/principal of the Punjab Institute of Preventive Opthalmology (PIPO), eye professor at Mayo Hospital and national coordinator for the prevention of blindness.

“It is a matter of great concern for the association that a regular vice chancellor has not been appointed for the last year and a half,” said the YDA officials, adding that they would approach Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to demand an inquiry into affairs at the KEMU.

They said that a new multi-storey building was being constructed on the historical campus even though experts had advised in the 1960s against any new buildings there because of a lack of space. They said that a new campus with a new hostel and hospital should be built elsewhere. They claimed that machinery worth Rs2.5 million had been stolen from the PIPO and the Health Department should conduct an inquiry into this.

YDA President Dr Rana Sohail, Chairman Dr Talha Sherwani, Dr Ghulam Qasim, Dr Murtaza Baloch, Dr Muhammad Khawar Khan, Dr Shahid Dreshak, Dr Hafiz Munir, Dr Umer, Dr Javaid and Dr Amjad participated in the meeting.
