WASHINGTON, DC: This is with reference to Najmuddin A Shaikh’s article of November 26 titled “The Haqqani affair and its aftermath”.
The fact is that neither Husain Haqqani nor Mansoor Ijaz is an angel. What the two of them are said to have done is, to say the least, abhorrent. The writer is absolutely right in saying that there will never be a transparent outcome of any inquiry. A couple of unanswered questions, however, remain mind-boggling. Why did the ISI chief fly to London to meet with Mansoor Ijaz? The people of Pakistan need to be assured that Haqqani has not been trapped in this scandal as a result of an ISI-Ijaz sting operation.
It would be wise for Pakistan’s military establishment to begin extricating itself from the affairs of the state that are not its concern. If it continues to play a major role in defining and implementing Pakistan’s foreign policy, the day may come when the people of Pakistan will follow the example of the Egyptian masses a là Tahrir Square.

The Haqqani affair and its aftermath (II)
Dear Editor
I would like to draw you attention to the element of truthfulness in the news items broadcasted on Express News. The news items needs to be truthful and duly verified before they go on air. One example is the news item on Saturday, 26 Nov, 2011. The channel kept on announcing that it is going to show a video of the situation on the Pak Army Check Post which came under NATO attack in Mohmmmand Agency. The video went on air around 2315, and I discovered that the video in fact was a video which was already in circulation on the internet since 15 November, 2011. The video is even available on the website http://pakistan67.blogspot.com/2011/11/how-pakistan-army-soldiers-celebrated.html. The title of the video is “How Pakistan Army Soldiers Celebrated Eid In South Waziristan”.
It is therefore necessary that the news items are verified and properly researched before they are shown to the people. In today’s world of widespread and easily available information and multiple sources of verification, it is not easy to deceive people with wrong reporting and videos stolen from various sources on the internet and then presenting those videos in an another context. Someone somewhere will always find the truth, and the channels keep on loosing their credibility.
Thanks
Hamid Eusafzai
