The International Labour Organisation (ILO) will assist the Pakistan government in preparing a report on human rights situation and the capacity building of human rights ministry officials on international laws, said a press release issued by the Human Rights Cell on Thursday.

A delegation constituting ILO South Asia Director Tine Staermose, Senior Specialist on International Labour Standards Coen Kompier and others met with the Adviser to Prime Minister on Human Rights Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar at his office.

The ILO team said they will assist in preparing the Universal Periodic Report (UPR) for Pakistan, which will be presented during the United Nations summit in 2012. They offered the ministry to engage in a consultative process on reporting mechanism on various UN conventions, specifically UPR 2012.

They also showed interest in identifying areas for mutual cooperation and providing training to the ministry officials in ILO laws and standards.

The delegation members assured the human rights adviser of their continued support and cooperation in UPR process and in ratification of different ILO conventions.

They said the initiative will create goodwill for Pakistan at the international level.

Khokhar said that UN conventions should not just be ratified but also implemented through domestic legislation.

He also briefed the delegation about the health ministry’s role in the withdrawal of reservations on International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Convention against Torture and hurdles in the reporting mechanism of these conventions.
