Helping hand: Bill Gates’ charity to donate $0.5m to flood survivors

About 4,200 people will receive assistance through a cash transfer scheme.

KARACHI: A member of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Michael Gateway, said that they will donate $500,000 in a cash transfer project to assist the flood survivors in Sindh.

A delegation met the chief minister, Qaim Ali Shah, on Monday. He expressed his gratitude for the financial assistance and said that other organisations should follow suit.

About 4,200 people will be given Rs10,000 each through ATM cards, which will be generated through NADRA’s database for the disaster. The project will be launched in Umarkot first and will be gradually expanded to other districts such as Sanghar, Naushahro Feroze, Badin and Thatta.

The additional chief secretary of planning and development, Israr Malik signed cash transfer documents on behalf of the Sindh government.

Israr, the country representative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Waqar Ajmal, MNA Dr Azra Pechuho, special assistant to the Prime Minister, Shahbaz Wazir Ali were present at the meeting, among others.
