Kashmir impasse: Ex AJK prime minister hails Pak-India resolve

Published: November 13, 2011

Believes Kashmiris should be included in the forthcoming talks on the issue.

MIRPUR:

Seasoned Kashmiri politician and former AJK prime minister, Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry, appreciated recent developments made by the prime ministers of India and Pakistan on the sidelines of the Saarc summit in Maldives, including the promotion of bilateral ties and the peaceful settlement of all outstanding issues between the neighbours, including Kashmir.

Talking to media men in Mirpur on Saturday, Sultan urged India to positively respond to Pakistan’s sincere efforts and willingness for a peaceful settlement on all issues through composite dialogue, including the Kashmir dispute. He added that it was imperative that self-determination be granted to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to maintain peace in the region.

Sultan was optimistic about the positive response from India, adding that Pakistan had always been seeking a peaceful solution to the Kashmir issue through bilateral talks.

He also observed that dialogue between the two countries hinged on India’s acceptance of international treaties related to Kashmir.

The former prime minister believed that people and representatives of Jammu and Kashmir should be included in the forthcoming Indo-Pak talks on the Kashmir issue, adding that only Kashmiris had the right to decide their eventual destiny.
