President Zardari on Friday directed the Sindh government to take all coalition partners including the MQM, the PML-F and the ANP into confidence over the upcoming local government system.
Presiding over a meeting at Bilawal House, President Zardari asked PPP ministers to organise the party at local level and directed them to make frequent visits to their constituencies since elections are approaching fast.
The meeting, attended by a few PPP senior cabinet members from Sindh government, also discussed reshuffling in the party by changing the posts of several office-bearers in Karachi and other divisions.
Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Senior Minister Pir Mazharul Haq, MNA Faryal Talpur, Minister for Finance Murad Ali Shah, Minister for Irrigation Jam Saifullah Dhareejo, Speaker Sindh Assembly Nisar Khuhro and Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Wasan were present on the occasion.
Sources said that during the meeting, the president directed party members to avoid confrontation by issuing statements which, according to him, may harm the party.
Briefing the media later, Wasan said the president discussed the law and order situation and directed home department to prepare for Muharram.
In a convoluted statement, the home minister said that general elections would be held in 2013 as scheduled, but there is possibility that they can be held in 2012.
Quoting the president, Wasan said: “The president said that 2012 is the year of Senate elections and general election would be held in 2013. PPP leaders have to work hard to organise party and resolve people’s problems.”
He added that President Zardari had asked party leaders to legislate on local government system in light of the 1973 constitution.
“We will debate the LG system in the upcoming assembly session, which will be held soon,” he said.
He also said that the issue of Dr Zulfiqar Mirza was not discussed at the meeting.
When asked about the arrest of two suspects involved in Dr Imran Farooq’s murder case, the home minister said: “Sometimes, secret investigation cannot be revealed.”
