LAHORE:
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is to step up its social media presence, relaunch its student and youth wings and heighten criticism of ‘the establishment’ as it seeks to make itself more attractive to young voters.
Last month, party chief Nawaz Sharif set up a committee that included MNAs, party officials and IT experts to determine why Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) was doing so well among young people, where the PML-N was going wrong, and how to remedy this. Following the PTI’s impressive rally at Minar-i-Pakistan last Sunday, largely attended by young people, the committee’s task has taken on even greater urgency.
Sources in the party told The Express Tribune that the committee, which included people with expertise in psychology and anthropology, had made recommendations on how to capture the youth vote and the PML-N was preparing to act on them.
The committee members conducted extensive surveys of young people, especially PTI supporters, over social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. According to their findings, some 20 per cent of young people support PTI, either because of strong personal feelings towards Imran Khan, or because of his focus on corruption.
PML-N Deputy General Secretary Ahsan Iqbal conceded that his party had neglected the youth vote for the last four years, allowing the PTI to capture their support. “The PPP and PML-N have both relied on their traditional voters and ignored the emerging force of young people,” he said.
The committee has suggested that the party both hone its message and make it more accessible to the young. To that end, it has recommended that it step up its presence on Facebook and other social networking sites.
At the same time, the PML-N would try to play up its credentials as the only party truly opposed to the military establishment, said the sources. Three party members, including Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, would make vocal criticisms of the military and its behind-the-scenes role in government. Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif would continue attacking President Asif Ali Zardari, though “in a more sophisticated tone” than he adopted at the PML-N’s rally in Lahore on October 28, said the sources.
Iqbal said that many young people who had grown up this century thought of the PML-N and PPP as collaborators responsible for Pakistan’s ills. The “seeds of hatred” among the young were sown by Gen Pervez Musharraf, who repeatedly condemned the two parties as looters, he said.
He said that the PML-N would seek to change this perception among the 80 per cent of undecided young voters. He said many young people do have positive thoughts about the PML-N, but were reluctant to voice their support because of peer pressure as the party was “unfashionable”.
Iqbal said that the PML-N would push its image as an anti-establishment party, as young people wanted “real” change, unlike Imran Khan, who was “deceiving youth in the name of change”.
“We will give youth the message that the military establishment does not want change and this is where all the country’s problems stem from.
We want to change the civil-military imbalance and make the law supreme,” he said. “We will expose the true face of the establishment and of Imran Khan.”
He said that the party would improve its communication with young people by becoming more active on social media and by energising its youth and students wings by bringing in fresh faces.
Sources in the party said that the strategy to capture the youth vote would be presented to Nawaz Sharif for approval once he returns to Pakistan from Turkey and the UK.

Right now PML-N should be concerned about keeping the existing voters' loyalty, rather than targeting the new youth voters leaning towards PTI. Poor performances in the current term, lack of right decisions at the right time, and being a copy cat for PTI Jalsa will only make existing voters turn away. Be original, have credibility by doing what you say and then expect people to follow you. Think at a higher level, then only you can be original and visionary.
pml.n zindabad
One day you will see nawaz shareef in T shirt and denhum jeans with punk hair style to attract youth ,he should also have a guitar in hanging on his neck !!may be he succeed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!he use to sing rafis songs he should try micheal jackson now!!
i would like to say that pml n should try first good governece and change police culture of Punjab who is always politicize and also need educate police about the fundamental rights of citizen .ITS TIME TO CHANGE Punjab police
IMRAN Khan zindabad
i am afraid PMLN will break youths heart in upcoming elections bcoz PTI youngsters doesnt have votes and strategy just by moving to musical shows is not the guarantee of winning national elections. Ahsan Iqbal should really concentrate on it. he should also reply emails which PMLN supporters sending on his personal emails.
IMRAN khan zindabad
it seemsgood that now PMLN is following PTI.....but dear nawaz group it is more better if PMLN start following Imran's vision........and Imran's vision is to bring change.....it is my request and appeal to those peoples which r still in favour of PMLN and PPP.....PLZ open your eyes and sense and recognise the honest and sincere personality mean Imran khan,,,,if u r real lover of PAKISTAN and become part in bringing +ive change in Pakistan.........
PML-N is generation Late!
This family party of brothers and their sons and their nephews and husbands of this daughters and sons of their sisters has nothing to offer to the youth of Pakistan anymore, Infact I will make sure that I teach my future kids Never to vote for PML-N in future ever!
Imran Khan is the only leader now who can stand against drone attacks, falling economy, target killings, terrorism n pml can do only two things and that is "making money and playin dirty politics" we want PTI not because he wos or is our teenage crush but for his loyality, determination, sincerity, honesty! We want to get rid off the parties who have made Pakistan there family bussiness!!! Get off pmln we want tiger ,we want a man and tht is SIR IMRAN KHAN!
To win young votes you need to win the hearts and minds of the young people. This is abundantly clear. But hypocrisy and democracy cannot go side by side. Nawaz league need to shun its hypocrisy. About 3 billion dollars of Pakistan's money stashed in UK and Saudi Arabia and talking of ending corruption is nonsense. Charity begins at home. Living in 25 million pound sterling London Mayfair apartments, and talking about poor people doesn't make any sense either. Raiwind Palace is spread over an area of 1800 acres, with 1700 supporting staff. 13 billion of public money spent to build the Raiwind road. Grotesque and hideous marble and gold plated furniture is not helping at all. They should realize "Some people can be fooled for some time, but all people cannot be fooled all the time".
lol, yet another internet manager of PMLN,,,,,,,,, hadd hai yar,,,,,,,, this party (PMLN) is reactive and not proactive,,,,,,,,,,,, has no vision at all what so ever.
i congrate the establishment if they really are with imran khan.at last thay have found a good leader too.they always hav supported these crap people.why not a true, sincere, clean, selfless, devoted to nation, and above all a visionary leader, who lives in the heart of people.only he can change the establishment as well.agar zardari aor shahbaz jese log hukumat chala saktai hai tu IK isi dawra dega InshaAllah.lov u imran.we will not only vote for u,we will die for u.
Ok guys give them a break. It will be fun to watch Nawaz and Co. on facebook, twitter and forums. Don't stop them. Let them come. By the way this is their plan and i am sure they will discuss all this.
Targeting the youth
In its effort to plug in all loopholes in campaign strategy that rivals, especially Imran’s PTI, could take advantage of, PML-N is working on a policy exclusively aimed at reaching out to the youth. “We will go out to tell them what Nawaz Sharif, and his two stints in power, have given to Pakistan,” PML-N’s deputy information secretary Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan said. “We will tell them that the motorway they travel on was not always there … these modern airports in Lahore and Karachi, somebody had the vision to build all these things,” Khurram said. “The youth itself must realise that serving a country is one thing and raising hollow slogans is another,” he added, in an apparent rebuke of Imran’s anti-America rhetoric, especially his opposition to drone strikes.
Let me tell them that the last elections was the first time i voted and i voted for PML-N based on their past work. Now the question i ask from PML-N is what they have done in this term? Why should i vote for them again? On what basis? What they did for Punjab in this term, let alone Pakistan? In this term they were complete failure. So i have no reason to vote for them again and i am sure many will fell this way.
Enough is enough, no more ppp and no more pml n, our good wishes with sir Imran Khan, and i hope that 200 honest people are there in Pakistan, which required to imran khan, I request to imran khan that in Karor Lal e saon distt. Layyah please select your honest candidate which have voting to PTI.
GOD BLESS YOU IMRAN KHAN

Shows ALOT how youngsters shape their opinion!
Another copy. All of this shows PML-N is out of ideas and is following each and every move of sir.Imran Khan. This shows who is the real leader. By the way Pakistani people are not sheep and goats who can be deceived by anyone by just going to facebook. Honesty and Credibility is first pre-requisite. Which PML-N (noora kushti) dont have. So best of luck with another copied move. Truth stays truth. No matter how much you try to distort it. No one can stop the tsunami of young men of Pakistan. And inshallah, sir.Imran Khan will lead the tsunami and status quo politicians will be brought to justice.
as the party was “unfashionable”.
_
EXACTLY!!! PTI is a Fashion now.
Wrong means do not justify the right ends. Nawaz Sharif is a product of the ISI and nothing will change that. Moreover, the PML(N) has had it's share of power over the past three decades and has miserably failed to deliver, and their current regime in Punjab is enough evidence of it. Oh and did someone mention the 1999 agreement with Musharraf, perhaps a Bhutto like audacity to stand up against the oppressor even at the cost of your own life would have yielded dividends for their so called anti-establishment orientation but then again you have to be a selfless leader to do that. PTI is gaining popularity because of its correct ideological orientation and honesty of purpose over the course of 15 years not because of Twitter or anything else. Imran Khan and PTI is our only hope now.
So what you've learned? PMLN is going to be history after few months, year..inshaAllah..same will be done with PPP and other status quo..PTI rocks!
Guys PML-N is the party you should look for, I am their newly appointed internet (read:facebook) manager! Please do consider what N has to offer, and please politics and running a country are serious subjects; handing over your fate to your teenage crush may not be the best idea
@MarkH: Do u want him to make a Powerpoint presentation for you at his rallies? Would that satisfy "complex planning"? Apply your logic to presidential candidates from other parties in PK and even to other more developed countries. Do they spell out complex plans? An outline is the most he can do. If ur so stubborn in your cynicism as to desire more, then I'm wasting my breath.
PTI wants a change for the betterment of Pakistan
PML-N wants a change to catch up with PTI
We want CHANGE, not political rivalry. Imran Khan zindabad.
Its no Rocket Science.
Imran Khan isn't a billionaire. And won't be one even if he completes his term as Prime Minister of Pakistan. He Pays his taxes. He has no plans of making PTI his dynasty. He doesn't use any sorts of Ethnic or Linguistic card. Only "Pakistan" politics. He isn't hiding more than Half of his assets in Foreign Banks. He isn't depending on Patwaris and Thanedars unlike the Sharifs. On the other hand, PML-N is a dynasty of Nawaz Sharif with half of his family members are either MNA's of MPA's or Provicial Ministers. Nawaz Sharif is living a life of a Mughal Emperor wthen more than half of the countrymen are living below the povertyline, and that does not sit right with the youth of the Country.
The time of PML-N is over. PTI is the Future, Imran Khan is just the right guy on so many levels. InshAllah he's be our next PM.
Pakistani youth who believe every word that comes out of people like Imran Khan and Zaid hamid, it is hard for "bhoolay bhaalay" people like Sharif brothers to win them over.
I bet not a single member of this committee is less than fifty years old
Young are no more prone to be fooled by hallow sloganeering. We have taken time to conclude that PMLN is part of status quo. We want change a real change that PMLN can't bring. If they have any plan, implement and show us in Punjab. If they want to introduce yellow cap for graduates in whole Pakistan, then better to choose someone else.
@Faraz: 100 % Correct Faraz ...
but he is not able to get much votes then imran khan !
They're forgetting the most basic principle of marketing: You cannot sell a bad product!
Time is over PMLN, you are too late. VOTE FOR CHANGE VOTE FOR PTI.
only PML N has the gutts to challenge the military power.its good initiative to use social media.
He said many young people do have positive thoughts about the PML-N, but were reluctant to voice their support because of peer pressure as the party was “unfashionable”.
Very true
@ Zia Ur Rehman ayen, bayen, shayen na karo, give the answer in straight yes or no. how many times imran has said it in 15 years? whereas the matter of Nawaz being a product of army concerns, he has many times mentioned, it was a mistake.
@bukhari: And then be out to Saudi Arabia after two years, LOL.
Neat. More trolls in the making. Looks like as a counter to PTI attempting to take away votes from PML-N, PML-N will try to steal away some of the PTI troll votes. (I'd bet those trolls come in as a close 2nd to Imran Khan's lack of ability for complex planning when it comes to people being turned off by PTI)
Another lack of insight...I don't think PTI has targeted youth...PTI's message matches with the sentiments of youth...this is not a marketing campaign of micro-segmentation...you have to have credibility first... Secondly...going against establishment might seem like a good idea at the surface...they need to understand that people of Pakistan in general will always stand by their forces because of their culture & history. It is true that establishment's influence needs to be contained but that requires much more sincerity and sophistication, both of which are lacking in PML-N...first establish credibility and then come back to the design board!
Better late than never. Its a welcome initiative by PML (N). People need to be told that many of Pakistan's current ailments stem from military's intrusive political role and that the only party aiming to change the civil-military imbalance is PML (N).
Hiring psychologists and anthropologists? hahaha what are they thinking! my 15 year old brother can successfully run a facebook page. PMLN needs to focus on getting rid of the corruption and incompetence but it won't really matter. We've all fallen for PTI :) Jeay PTI!
What a joke! They have been playing "catch up" with PTI for quite some time now, with little success. I'm afraid they'll have to dispense with Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif for the youth to be "attracted" to their party. Otherwise, it's Imran Khan all the way.
As for this anti-establishment theme, it is not going to help them much. The people hate the politicians much more than the army, which still has great respect, also a renewed one because it is being seen to be resisting American pressure now, unlike the civilian leadership. I don't who is giving these "ideas" to PML-N. How in the world is an anti-establishment message going to attract the youth? The youth want CHANGE and for that to happen PML-N top leadership will have to CHANGE. A good step would be to follow Imran Khan's advice and declare all hidden assets truthfully. But that is too much to expect....
@Majid Urrehman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo7CNtJtn7I Listen to his views on civil military relationship. He clearly said that "I will treat Pakistan army, like erdogan did to turkish army, if they try to put their nose in political affairs"....Secondly, how can u believe that PML-N, which has been grown in the laps of establishment, is actually not in control of army anymore??.I mean how can u believe that PML-N is really independent?... Do not forget the hypocrisy of PML-N. They were also acting like "anti-americans" in public, but wiki-leaks has exposed their american puppetry. Do not get into their trap. They are the masters of hypocrisy!!!!!
yet another photocopy tactics..
Lolz....choor bazar coming to Facebook....!! We are not stupid Nawaz, you cannot use us to protect your wealth, PTI Zindabad!!
My suggestion to PML-N is simple:
shed your "conservative" past (including telling Rana Sanaullah to stop pandering to Sipah-e-Sahaba thugs!!!) and ally yourself with the progressive thinkers and intellectuals of this country who have been talking about the dangers of this military-mullah-feudal alliance in this country that has been taking this country down a destructive path
remember that PTI also has found allies in Jamaat-e-Islami and various sectarian-jihadi groups as well.
maybe this could be Nawaz Sharif's mea culpa after being a Ziaist progeny. time to shed this once and for all.
"We want to change the civil-military imbalance and make the law supreme,” he said. “We will expose the true face of the establishment and of Imran Khan.” Imran Khan have you courage to say this?
PML-N will repeat its 1997 performance
Real people, real party! PMLN Zindabad...muah :)
They need to get rid of their corruption first. Writing on facebook alone wont help their cause. Yet another example where they are trying to steal PTI's idea.. Losers
