MULTAN:

Wheel chairs and blood screening kits were distributed among dozens of physically-handicapped children and those suffering from thalassamia, respectively, at a charity event on Tuesday.

The event was jointly organised by Rotary Club and Express media group.

Rotary Club Multan president Khawaja Hussain said the ceremony was meant to encourage affluent sections of the society to come forward and contribute for the welfare of those in need.

Pop singer Shezad Roy and comedian Hanif Raja who had performed at the occasion also appealed the audience to make generous donations for thalasemia patients.

Amna Thalassamia Centre administration said they were providing free-of-charge blood screening facilities to thalassamia patients in the city. Before the facility, the audience was told, residents of the southern districts of the province had to visit Karachi or Lahore to get their bloods screened.

Some estimates put thalassamia patients in Pakistan at around seven per cent of the country’s population.
