RAWALPINDI: A policeman was shot dead while another was injured when an armed man suspected of murdering his wife in the Shakrial area opened fire on the police party on Thursday night, police said. The suspect, Shahzad Ahmed, who is wanted by the police for allegedly murdering his wife in 2005, fled after killing Constable Mohammad Riaz, 45, and injuring Constable Bilal Hameed, 25. The incident occurred after a plain-clothes police party led by Constable Riaz conducted a raid to arrest the suspect, who was hiding in the Shakrial area. On seeing the police party, the suspect opened fire, killing Riaz on the spot. Both the policemen were taken to Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH), where Constable Riaz was pronounced dead, while Bilal Hameed was operated upon. A doctor at the hospital said Riaz was dead on arrival and had been shot four times, while Hameed, who had been shot once, was out of danger. The police are investigating.
