Electricity crisis: Irsa told to inform Wapda about water releases

Wapda has also been asked to inform all concerned in case of any substantial deviation in the indent plan.

Irsa has been asked to inform the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) a week in advance when water is released from Tarbela and Mangla dams so that power generation may be better planned.


Minister for Water and Power Naveed Qamar gave the instructions to Irsa while presiding over an inter-provincial meeting on water and other related matters in Islamabad on Thursday.

Wapda has also been asked to inform all concerned in case of any substantial deviation in the indent plan.

The minister also constituted a sub-committee comprising Irsa and provinces and asked that a plan be submitted on the release of water for the coming Rabi season.

Qamar said that the government is taking various steps to reduce the power shortages. Various projects of hydropower generation and dams are being constructed in this regard to end the energy crisis, he said, adding that the country has more than 60,000 MW hydel power generation potential.
