Dress modestly: Masked men enter girls’ school, thrash students

Published: October 9, 2011

Fear grips Satellite Town schools as 60 men beat up students for dressing ‘inappropriately’.

RAWALPINDI:

In a first for the garrison city, sixty masked men carrying iron rods barged into a girls’ school in Rawalpindi and thrashed students and female teachers on Friday.

The gang of miscreants also warned the inmates at the MC Model Girls High School in Satellite Town to “dress modestly and wear hijabs” or face the music, eyewitnesses said.

Fear gripped the area following the attack and only 25 of the 400 students studying in the college were present on Saturday. The school employs 30 female teachers.

Attendance in other educational institutions also remained low. After hearing about the attack, all schools in the city shut down, an official of the Rawalpindi District Administration (RDA) told The Express Tribune.

A student of the girls’ school managed to inform the administration of the nearby boys’ high school of the attack. “[However,] the armed gang was so powerful that we could not rescue our teachers and colleagues over there,” Noail Javed, a grade 10 student, said.

In-charge of MC High Schools in Rawalpindi issued a notification to the heads of all girls’ schools to take pre-emptive measures to avoid such incidents in future. According to the notification, a gang comprising 60 to 70 miscreants entered into the school from a gate that was “strangely open”.

All the MC school heads were assigned the responsibility of protecting the students by the notification. A school headmistress wishing not to be named said, “How is it possible for us to protect the students from such elements. The city administration should review its security plan.”

The notification also suggested that the heads should not inform the students about the situation, so that they are not alarmed into skipping school. “Police is investigating the matter,” the notification said. Following the notification, the heads of the schools also shared the numbers of relevant police stations with the teachers in case of any untoward situation in future.

Asjad Ali, a student of class 9 at the nearby boys’ high school, said that his younger brother Awais, a student of grade 5, was also among those who were brutally beaten by the miscreants with iron rods. “The police did not come,” he said.

A police official of the New Town Police Station, asking for anonymity, told The Express Tribune, “We were under strict instructions to do nothing.”

District Education Officer Qazi Zahoor and Rawalpindi Commissioner Zahid Saeed were not immediately available for comments.

    @Maddy Khan @JJ:

HAHAHAHA. Are you absolutely serious? You have no right to say who we study with and how we dress. What’s WRONG with this? Are you serious? There is SO much wrong with this. You don’t randomly go to a girls school and beat women with rods. I’m pretty sure that’s in the Quran. Also, the I’m pretty sure the school uniform is modest enough and covers the entire body. No one has any right to beat up innocent people. Even Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh), did not beat up people when they did not do what he preached. Preach, yes. If they listen, good for you. if they don’t, LEAVE THEM ALONE. Do not shove your thoughts down their throats. Your mentality is what’s wrong here.

    Cheers

    @Maddy Khan:
religion cannot be limited to confined views. Please define what Islam is in totality. Women in Pakistan dress modestly, and specially in the locality where the attack took place. we unfortunately have started arabizing religion, our dress displays modesty, but we now put forth that Suadi type dress in which women eyes can only be seen is Islamic dress. Even during the days of the Caliphs the women in the Levant covered their heads while those in the Middle East just showed their eyes, this was associated more with culture than Islamic precepts.Religion provides apt guidance and is assimilative of cultures as religion is absorbtive in nature, as seen in Indian history in which different Islamic sects since centuries are living in the same abode. please do support baton wielding men in the name of religion, it would do nothing but bring in destruction.
    God bless Pakistan

The girls must be covered from head to toe and there must be segregation of sexes.

    A. The girls must be covered from head to toe injunction applies only if they are in mixed company. This was a GIRLS school with LADY teachers. I hope you know what that means.

    B. For educational institutions the standards are set by Al Azhar University of Egypt. This Islamic University has banned the Hijab on campus.

    C. Coming to there must be segregation of sexes, did you notice the girls were minding their business in a girls school. It was the ‘soldiers of Islam’ who violated the ‘segregation’. Shall we stone the violators to death?

Can you see the issues now?

Excuse me Maddy Khan. You amuse me…

Why should anyone be requesting them to dress in a certain way? I am not saying that one should dress indecently, and i am sure that these girls were not dressing inadequately and coming to school.

If you are someone who is not condemning this act at all, then i say you should act in the same way. Get out some iron rod right now, and beat every woman and girl you know who does not wear a hijab or dress modestly(according to you). Can you do that? Only then should you talk all this talk that you are talking.

and you know i dont care about about what the islamic laws say and what they dont, that is another completely twisted matter altogether. But my logic is plain and simple…. just imagine the Prophet beating young girls for this… can you imagine that scenario? I can’t. I guess the Islam i know and what you take islam to be is completely different.

Simply, people like you make me sick inside out!
You know I “almost” feel like beating up the likes of you. But i won’t, for i am different from your kind…Thankfully!

Modesty is commanded in Christianity as well as Islam. Modesty should be defined and enforced, however, only by loved ones. A parent or guardian who has faithfully fed, clothed, encouraged, and taught a child has earned the right to determine what is modest, and has earned the right to apply balanced disciplinary action when the rules of the parents’ home are disobeyed.

Religious leaders may have the right to teach definitions of modesty, but have no physical enforcement rights, unless they are the ones providing food, clothing, and nurture.

Masked strangers have no such rights at all. They have simply applied force to try to compel others to their will, and will one day find themselves facing superior force – in this world or the next.

Now I am going to comment in a very unpopular way…but if these girls don’t dress properly out of Islamic values or shame…then it might be the only solution to enforce a dress code with a bit pressure. Pakistan is degenerating at a fast rate. Corruption, rape, high inflation, bad governance…and this is all connected. The people seem to think that success comes by coping the western values…..but they forgot that Islam was victorious when we implemented Allahs laws…not now with democracies hypocraty…

To Richard and R S Johar – the reason I used the word “dogs” is because Muslims are taught that dogs (along with pigs) are unclean animals that can not enter houses and must be rejected and avoided.

I used the word “dogs” because I assume it is an insult to call a Muslim a dog, hence calling these “men” _lower_ than dogs basically means I believe they are the lowest form of life – they should be rejected by all decent people, should be thrown out of every home and should be treated like the scum they truly are.

Of course dogs are intelligent and wonderful creatures – I know it and so do most other people.

You talk about Islam and you do not even know the basic tenants of Islam… One, being a law abiding citizen even if you live in a non-Islamic country. Your kind keep throwing the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) left right and center yet you do not know what he preached!

Save yourself from hellfire and start obeying Allah SWT. Do not distort the religion he sent to us with your perverted culture! Remember Islam is the most modern religion of all… Our Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) brought a revolution that brought social & economic justice for all. YES FOR ALL! He is rahamat-ullill-alameen and not rahamat-ullill-muslameen!

    Why can’t men BEHAVE DECENTLY???

If men can NOT behave decently, the there is SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEM.

If they are spreading good things and urging young generations of our society to dress modestly, why don’t they come unmasked. After all they are giving good guidance.

Why they are destroying schools, kidnapping teachers, expelling Ahmedis from schools, very soon they will issue religious diction agaisnt Shia, Bravelvi, Deobandis, Nasbandis and other sects living in the society.

My heart is under strict instructions not to comment on this article and I know the source too which gave these instruction,Its my mind.My mind allows my heart to ask only one question. So,here is the question,Islam came to abolish the centuries old inhuman customs and traditions of dark ages,it was the most revolutionary religion of the day causing millions to convert to it so quickly because people felt safe and their livelihood secure under its umbrella. To learn and to acquire knowledge was the first command,to shun the taboos of dark ages was first order. Then, what happened that muslims of today want to do quite the opposite of all those teachings? It needs very urgent and deep research to find and redress the true causes of downfall so that something is done to come out of this “quick-sand of reverse events” that are devouring muslim”s Islamic culture fast.

These lunatics have nothing to do with Islam. If anything they are psychatrically unstable people really needind their heads examined. To those supporting their actions, Islam would never allow such things to happen. This is precisely the reason that youth turn waya from Islam. Islam appels people to understand. It appeals to reason. It does not ask men to become despots. These people sincerely disfigure Islam.

If what you preach is better than what I do then first learn to become a better human being. Then I may follow your version of my religion. Don’t barrage into girls schools with your faces covered and try to thrust your version of religion on them. Before asking women to do hijab, you need to learn to lower your gaze.

You think you are Muslim. Well I have a surprise for you as well as your imams. None of you can be considered a Muslim until you all learn to respect other humans (regardless of their religion) – that is what we learn from our beloved prophet – whose name is being belittled by you and your Imams.

Where exactly are you getting your ideas from?

“TRUE islamic country like Saudi Arabia. And see the results – Saudi Arabia is one of the richest muslim countries in the whole world. This is the power of Islam.”

Saudi Arabia: ruled by decadent rich kings
Saudi Arabia: Where men and women can’t mingle resulting in the rise of homesexuality in the country
Saudi Arabia: RICHEST only because of oil
Saudi Arabia: the biggest supporter of the U.S.A
Saudi Arabia: the country where women cannot even drive
Saudi Arabia: Arabs who don’t even support the Palestinian cause
Saudi Arabia: place where ‘lesser’ muslims like pakistani’s go to earn money and bring bad ideals to a peaceful sufi land
Saudi Arabia: is not my idea of the power of Islam.

All part of this new nonsense to call Ramzan ‘Ramadan’ and Abu Dhabi ‘Abu Zhehbi’ – we’re not Arabs just because we’re Muslim ok, we have our own cultural roots embedded firmly in the Indian subcontinent.

Twenty years ago, there was peace & tranquility in Pakistan. People were more human. Women felt secure and were able to go out and do chores alone. But now Pakistan has become a corrupt and violent place. Killing someone in the name of Islam is becoming common. And if someone disagrees with one’s opinion or way of life then he/she should be killed as well. Women don’t feel secure any more. Children are getting kidnaped and their schools are blasted with bombs. All this is done in the name of Islam.

Islam that was practiced by our forefathers was definitely not the one that is being preached today. Is it that our forefathers knew nothing about Islam and that is way there was peace then, or is it that we have twisted Islam for personal gains?

Extremely disappointed with the reasoning of those who either outright or tacitly support the violence against the school girls. Where do you get off telling anyone how they live their life? The beauty of Islam is that it provides a great deal of latitude within which one can live ones life while traveling ever closer toward God. It shouldn’t matter what the girls were wearing – Niqab, Hijab, Shalwar Qameez, Jeans and a Tee shirt or even a skirt and blouse – if you are the type of individual that cannot keep your eyes lowered and feel you have to resort to violence just because you believe differently, then you do not deserve to live free in any society.

Unfortunately, these guys probably think they have done something very good. They use ideas like “enjoin the right and forbid the wrong” and believe that they are following that. I cannot believe the comments in support of this. By the way, why does no one thrash the old perverts who attack innocent boys in the majlises? Or the men who go to red light areas and bring diseases back home to their wives? If it’s all about Islam, then why are such attacks so focused on women? I am pretty sure molesting innocent children causes a lot more harm to people than a ponytail hanging outRecommend

@JJ: And I bet you are a man. It’s thick-headed thinking like yours that will never allow this religion to progress. I can’t believe some of the crap I am reading in these comments.

@Xurmat Xara: this is a very good step?? May Allah have mercy on you. Do you want your daughter or sister to get beaten with iron rods by strange men when she is at school, because she doesn’t have a hijab or niqab on? Even animals have rights not to be abused or hit unjustly, what about people? Do you hit everyone you morally disagree with?

Violence is our lowest state. May Allah grant hidaya to all of you that believe that this was “right” or “justified” and may Allah have mercy on all of us. Ameen.

@Sandra Bell Islam is a peaceful religion?! OK if you say so. I’m just amazed how whenever people refer to Islam they have to add “peaceful religion” just so that the rest of us Kuffars know it is a peaceful religion. All of us Kuffars know how peaceful it is, muslims are the kindest, most forgiving, caring, loving people out there. They love us kuffars no matter what religion we belong to. They don’t have superiority complex like the rest of us kuffars. This is to all Kuffars, learn to be like muslims, Allah’s chosen people.
