Not ‘Sharif’ enough: Punjab’s Rs1.63b enough to spray whole world, says Memon

Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif should focus on real issues, like dengue, says PPP man.

KARACHI: For a second day, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon responded to Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif’s criticism of the Zardari-led government by questioning their own performance.

“The Punjab government has set aside 1.63 billion rupees for fumigation against dengue, which is a huge amount,” said Memon. “I think it is enough to spray the whole world.”

While speaking to the media after inaugurating the Wali Khan Baber computer lab at the Karachi Union of Journalists office here on Tuesday, Memon lashed out at the Punjab government and said, “Rather than creating other non-issues, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Mian Nawaz Sharif should focus their full attention on the dengue issue which has taken the lives of more than 200 people in the Punjab.”

He said that Shahbaz Sharif’s son, Hamza Shahbaz, was the de facto chief minister of the Punjab and was looking after the dengue campaign. Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif was urging people to come on to the streets against load shedding but his brother Shahbaz, who is also the home minister, has ordered the Punjab police to baton-charge these protesters. But, according to Memon, Nawaz was responsible for load shedding as he had closed down the Keti Bandar and Thar coal projects, which were started by the late Benazir Bhutto.

Memon was of the opinion that Nawaz should apologise to the nation for hiding his agreement with dictator Pervez Musharraf. He should inform the nation about the agreement and why he undertook it. He should also answer why they not launched campaigns against the issues of the Lal Masjid operation and the assassination of Nawab Akbar Bugti and other major issues that arose during the Musharraf regime. “Actually, Mian Nawaz does not know what he is doing,” said Memon. “He is playing into the hands of those who would destroy what remains of his political prestige.” Answering a question, Memon said that Waseem Akhtar and Farooq Sattar, who were now standing by Nawaz Sharif on load shedding were silent during the Musharraf regime. Why did they not take to the streets when they were in the Musharraf government and were not able to produce even one megawatt of electricity?

According to Memon, the Punjab government has started a police culture and 13,000 people had been kidnapped in a year in that province. “If I want to, I can produce a charge sheet against Mian Nawaz since 1985, how he built the sugar mills and [the] billions of [rupees in] corruption.”  Answering a question on Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, Memon said that everyone had seen the photographs of him with members of banned outfits - Mian Nawaz Sharif should take action against him. The minister inaugurated the new computer lab, which will be used to train press club members and KUJ members. He addressed a condolence reference for journalist Yousaf Khan organised by the KUJ, where he shared his memories of the late journalist.

hamza khan | 12 years ago | Reply i love it when politicians like sharjeel memon talk about president musharraf and his regime. this feudal has the guts to compare this government with president musharraf, and then lie about not producing 'one megawatt of electricity.' this is a blatant lie and a tamasha with the people. the reality of what president musharrafs government did is in front of everyone, i think for every 1 mistake he made, he did 3 good things for the people. thats not a bad ratio, given the absurdity we're seeing now from them.
