KARACHI: The authorities have detained at least nine suspects, including extortionists and target killers, during raids in separate parts of the city on Thursday.

The Anti-Violent Crime Cell claims to have arrested alleged extortionists, including Hassan Ali and Mubashir. They said that they had received a tip-off from someone in a raid near Nipa Chowrangi in Gulshan-e-Iqal. The cell’s SP Usman Ghani said that the suspects had demanded Rs1.8 million from an architect in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and had been caught red-handed. He added that the architect’s name could not be disclosed for security reasons and that they had seized weapons from the criminal. “These men are professional criminals and have been involved in several extortion cases,” said the SP. “They use the names of political parties and Lyari gangsters to get the money.”

Another raid was carried out at a house in Azam Nagar. The authorities claimed to have caught a criminal identified as Atif Shah. They seized two Kalashnikovs, two shotguns and large number of bullets. The police said that Shah gave them important information which helped them conduct a raid in Liaquatabad No. 6 and arrest Shah’s partner in crime Imran Ansari.

They were about to arrest two other men Rashid and Fareed Akram, but they managed to escape. Shah and Ansari were moved to an undisclosed location for questioning and the police did not want to give any further details about the suspects.

The Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC) arrested the target killer who was wanted for the murder of ASI Sohail Butt in Mominabad. ACLC SSP Javed Akbar Riaz said that besides killing the ASI, the suspect had also been responsible for robberies. He added that they had seized a TT pistol and stolen motorcycle from him. Kamran alias Kami and Fayyaz were arrested in a raid conducted by the Saeedabad police in Daud Goth. The authorities claim that the two men had been involved in several robberies and murders.

The Rangers detained an alleged target killer identified as Yameen in Sector 5-E New Karachi. He was wanted for the murder of a political activist.
