PESHAWAR:

An additional Station House Officer (SHO) of Daudzai Police Station was shot dead by unknown gunmen here on Friday, police said.

An official of the Khazana Police Station, in whose jurisdiction the incident took place, told The Express Tribune that the police official, Muhammad Arif Khan, was on his way to work in a taxi around 1:30pm when two people on a motorcycle opened fire on him near Bakhsi Pul on Charsadda Road. Khan died on the spot.

Khan had four children, a daughter and three sons, and was resident of Dhaki Mirabad in Charsadda district. According to police officials, militants could be behind the assault, as he had no enmity; they added there were no reports of any threats to Khan.

City Police Chief Imtiaz Altaf termed the incident as a targeted assault and told reporters at the funeral that the SHO was killed because he was efficient at his job.

Altaf said that the security in Peshawar is on highly alert and the police have foiled a big terror plot.

He added the Nishtarabad bombing was not a security lapse, and militants managed to sneak an explosive-laden motorbike in the cover of the darkness. He was referring to the Monday blast in a CD market in Nishtarabad Chowk that killed seven people and injured over two dozens.

Khan’s funeral was held at the Malik Saad Shaheed Police Lines Peshawar and attended by senior police officials.
