SIALKOT:

Consumers have protested against the Gujranwala Electronic Pakistan Company (Gepco) for issuing inflated electricity bills during the month of August.

Consumers have complained that the latest power bills were issued by Gepco without taking any reading from the meters in several localities. The bills were issued a day before the last date for payment due to which the consumers have been facing problems in correcting the amount with authorities.

Area residents have also complained that Gepco officials were often absent from the office. “The due date for payment of the bills was September 14, 2011 and I got my bill a day earlier. It has been over stated by nearly Rs18,000,” said a Daska resident Bilal Khawar.

Consumers complained that Gepco had issued the inflated power bills with a difference of 100 to 200 units. When contacted, Gepco officials in Sialkot and Daska told reporters that this month’s electricity bills were issued without taking fresh meter readings because of the end of the fiscal year 2010-2011.
