Over 2m people suffer bad mental health in Karachi

Experts urge collective action on World Suicide Prevention Day

The society as a whole is responsible for collective actions for the prevention of suicides, experts said at an event held to mark the World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) late on Friday night.

The day represents the global commitment to focus on suicide prevention. The event was hosted by Karwan-e-Hayat (KeH) Institute for Mental Health Care.

The theme of WSPD 2021, Creating Hope Through Action, reflected the need for collective efforts to address this urgent public health issue. "People should be made aware of how to identify individuals around them who might be on the verge of committing suicide and how we can help them," said KeH CEO Zaheeruddin Babar.

KeH Chief Communication Officer said it is estimated that about 15 million people suffer from mental disorders in Pakistan and approximately two million alone in Karachi, she said.

Prof Iqbal Afridi, Dean, Faculty of Psychiatry, College of Physicians and Surgeons; Prof Haider Naqvi, Head of Psychiatry, Dow University of Health Sciences; Dr Ejaz Ahmed Vohra, Director Post Graduate (Clinical), Ziauddin University and Dr Qudsia Tariq, Chairperson Department of Psychology, University of Karachi also spoke on the occasion.
