Nawaz closes door for fake degree holders

Published: June 16, 2010

The National Assembly's Standing Committee for Education handed over 873 degrees of parliamentarians to the Higher Education Commission.

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif has advised all parliamentarians who have become members of the parliament by filing fake degrees to resign voluntarily and save themselves from disgrace.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, he said that his party had been following a principled stance that those who had made it into the assemblies through cheating had no right to represent the people. Nawaz said that clear instructions had been issued to the Muslim League Parliamentary Board that no candidate who had a fake degree would be issued a party ticket.

He said that the PML-N had followed this policy by not issuing a party ticket to one such candidate in Burewala, though he enjoyed public support in his constituency. He said his party accepted the loss of a NA seat but only in pursuit of a principle. Nawaz said no compromise will be made on this rule and no one will be allowed to make a mockery of democracy.

The statement comes after a number of MNAs and MPAs were found to be holding fake degrees in both the PML-N and PPP.

It was the law of the previous government that a candidate should at least have a graduate degree in order to become a legislature.

Thanks God that the previous government did not make the law that people who have earned degree in law can only become a legislature baring the rest of the people from contesting the polls.

Look at the case of Jamshed Dasti. He resigned due to simple reason that he was not a graduate. After his resignation, PPP awarded him party ticket again and he again won the election.

This proves that that it is not necessary that a prospective candidate should be a graduate but it is more important that how popular a candidate is in his or her own constituency.

In a country where majority of the population is illiterate it is nothing more than a fun that government should only allow graduate candidates to contest the polls.

It is too late for Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif to close the doors for fake degree holders. It is evident that candidates who won the election were popular candidates in their respective constituencies but to fill in the blank they have not other choice except to arrange fake degrees to fulfill the condition of the Election Commission.

Now General (R) Pervez Musharraf has also launched his own political party APML; I wonder how he is going to find graduate candidates from remote areas in order to win the national elections and win with two-third majority of votes to come back in power?

He also has to find suitable candidates who should be popular enough in their respective constituencies to win the national election.

Neither Mian Nawaz Sharif nor General (R) Pervez Musharraf have any control on the fast changing political scenario, as in the next general election, masses are going to choose only the honest candidates and not the one who have previously cheated the nation.

Time is running fast. The countdown has already started. Be careful in choosing the candidates. Popularity in the masses is more important than a degree.Recommend

Well done mian sahib! Its time we call a spade a spade. Its not a question of whether the member of parliament is a graduate or not. Its a question of morality; an MNA represents millions of people, if he gives any fake document like degree, tax return, list of assets tht person should be banned for life from holding public office period. We dont want liars or cheaters as our representatives. The time has come to draw the line somewhere.Recommend
