ISLAMABAD:

Renowned sign language expert Sohail Farooq, an employee of Silk Bank Islamabad Branch, and correspondent of monthly Pakistan Special died Saturday evening at Shifa International Hospital.

He had been in a coma after his bike was hit by an unknown car in F-8, near Cuhrh U-turn on July 11 around 1pm. He leaves behind two minor daughters and his widow to mourn his death. He was buried in the Khataria Graveyard near I-9 on Sunday.

The driver of the car that hit his bike is yet to be found. A colleague said Farooq was on the road unattended for half an hour after the accident. Police are yet to register a case, the colleague added.

Farooq’s nephew, Arif Javed, said the family had not registered an FIR with the police because they were engaged with him in the hospital.

Farooq was originally taken to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences but had to be transferred to Shifa International because the hospital had no ventilator available that day because of the Rawat coaster CNG fire incident. Five hours were wasted in the shifting.

ASI Noorullah of Margalla police said that they will register a case once the family approaches them. He added they reached the site immediately after receiving the complaint. Police are searching for the unknown person and investigations have been launched, he added.

Sohail was affiliated with PTV for the last 25 years and has written many books on the sign language; he has received many awards for his work. Presently, he was researching on Chinese and Japanese sign languages, according to the nephew.
