Pregnant woman found hanging from fan

JEHLUM: A pregnant woman, I S, was found dead, hanging from ceiling fan at her in-laws’ residence in Chak Beli Khan. Her mother, J K, registered a case with Chontra police against her husband, Husnain Ali, and his parents for “killing her five-month pregnant daughter Irum.”

Giving details of the incident, J K said I S’s father-in-law, Muhammad Bashir, called her to his house to tell her that I S had committed suicide. When she looked into her daughter’s room, her body was hanging from the ceiling fan with her bangles scattered all over the bed and floor.

J K began to scream and started accusing I S’s in-laws of murder.  In response, they pushed her out of their house.

Khanum was widowed two years ago with four daughters and a son. I S, 26, had married Hasnain Ali, a police officer, eight months ago. A little into their marriage, J K said I S was subjected to cruel behaviour by her husband and in-laws.

One day, according to the FIR registered by J K, Ali decided to go for “jihad training” and left for Muzaffarabad for around 25 days. I S protested against this move, but her father-in-law supported his son in his adventure. When Ali returned, his attitude towards his wife had become even more aggressive, the deceased’s mother asserted, leading to the day when she found her daughter’s body.

Samples taken from her body during post-mortem have been sent to a forensic laboratory for chemical examination. Authorities believe that once the report is available, the situation will become clearer.

The investigating officer told the Express Tribune that there was a sign of noose around the neck of the body, contradicting the belief that the deceased had committed suicide.

On the other hand, Hasnain Ali is posted at a police checkpost at Ranyal within the jurisdiction of Saddar Baroni police station. When Express Tribune enquired about the period during which he remained on jihad training as mentioned in the FIR, the staff said that the accused had taken 14 days leave from DSP Saddar Baroni police station around two and a half weeks ago.

After expiry of his leave, he had applied for a further seven day extension.

When Chontra police was asked about the arrest of the suspect, the investigating officer said action would be taken after they get the post-mortem report.
