'Govt has added 2,000MW to national power grid'

Gilani says govt will devise a plan to tackle the power crisis within two months.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Saturday that the government had added 2,000 megawatts to the national power grid and would devise a plan to tackle the power crisis within two months.

He stressed that all available gas and electricity resources will be tapped through implementation of short, medium and long term projects.

Gilani also said the country is facing power shortages due to wrong policies of the previous governments.

The government on Thursday decided to divert gas from CNG stations to industries and power generation companies though it deferred the decision to increase gas prices for domestic and industrial consumers.

The Economic Coordination Committee of the cabinet decided that petrol stations that sell compressed natural gas (CNG) to cars will see their gas supplies cut off for two days in Sindh and three days in Punjab. Sindh is constitutionally entitled to the right of first use on gas since it produces about 70% of the nation’s total production.

Please add, the underground coal gassification projects having lot of potential but lacking interest and funds from the government, even a pilot project requiring 7 - 8 million USD cannot be funded by this government which will actually give way to larger projects once commissioned succesfully.
