Why I hate KESC more than Cyclone Phet

Published: June 7, 2010

"Cyclone Phet madness came and went in 12 hours. My light went for 16." PHOTO: AFP

1. Cyclone Phet madness came and went in 12 hours. My light went for 16.

2. Cyclone Phet caused a false scare by coming within 40km of Karachi. KESC gave me false hope by turning the power on for 20 minutes.

3. Cyclone Phet fears made me run to the store to buy a dozen candles. KESC made me use them all.

4. Cyclone Phet was over-hyped but response to the crisis was good. KESC hid all day, and never answered the phone.

5. Cyclone Phet knocked over a wall at Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s mazaar. KESC caused my mom to smash the phone against the wall.

6. Cyclone Phet cancelled my classes. KESC cancelled my life.

7. After weeks of heat, Cyclone Phet allowed me to sit in my room with the fan off. KESC did the same.

8. Cyclone Phet exited forever to the Rann of Kutch, a barren wasteland. KESC refuses to follow suit.

9. Cyclone Phet caused people to stock their fridges with all kinds of items necessary for survival. KESC made short work of those.

10. Cyclone Phet scared my cat. KESC just p****d him off.

11. Cyclone Phet means I’ll have to dodge puddles for a couple of days. KESC ensures that I’ll be paranoid of dying-via-electrocution too.

12. The only thing I hate about Cyclone Phet more than the KESC, is the fact that all the tyres are too wet to burn.

13. I hate KESC more than Cyclone Phet because my laptop’s about to…

on Twitter, become a fan on Facebook

Thank you for speaking my mind. Apparently, I was the only one in my social circle without electricity. 25 Hours without it. Went at 1:00am Sunday Morning and came back 2:30am, last night, i.e. Monday morning. So yea, I feel the same for KESC.Recommend

    My dear,

Metrological dept. made fool everyone, how come they not find out whether
Cyclone coming to Karachi or not. I think is media is also involved in this hype. Its coming, its coming, only 300 miles, only 150 miles left.

However, Karachities were not afraid of that cyclone and waiting to welcome it, I don’t know what they want to see. Buy anyway, Dept. shown their effeminacy.Recommend

Hilarious! The strangest thing is electricity prices have increased but there is no supply of electricity, we are required to pay more for the little which is supplied. No compensation for the damage which is done due absence of electricity.Recommend

A thoroughly enjoyable article though, However Eight people died of electrocution on sunday.

Due to winds and trees power lines fall down. The people in low lying area suffer. Imagine that water enters your house there is water outside a wire drops and yes your whole family is eletrocued in seconds. I am sure you will love KESC mate. Yes the vast majority suffers but if a life is saved I think its worth it.Recommend

Why I Hate Insipid Writing More Than the KESC

KESC deprives me of the internet. Insipid writing makes me wary of ever going online
KESC makes no bones about being substandard. Insipid writing has pretenses to quality and originality.
The hardships of every blackout are, within approximation, the same. Insipid writing consistently finds new ways to horrify.
The KESC knows enough to turn off their phones when they perform badly. Insipid writers are ravenous for feedback.

I kid, I kid. But really, these lists comparing apples to oranges while beating a dead horse (possibly WITH the oranges and apples? I don’t know; the metaphor took a wrong turn somewhere and is still lost) and whining about blackouts are a little old, no? Recommend

    Cynicism has its limits!

I salute KESC. The Engineers and the Workers desrve our thanks; who are abused, stoned and at times shot in the process of delivering energy to our homes for 18 hours out of 24 each day.

Not being able to understand the mechanics of Electricity generation, transmission and distribution it is quite easy for the media and arm chair critics to denounce KESC, or for that matter any service provider.

KESC was an organization par excellence. Its destruction has been brought about by bureaucrats and politicians sitting in Islamabad. The process has taken 20 years.

May the learned writer be informed, that our federal government has a policy [cast in stone] since mid eighties, not to construct thermal power plants in the public sector. The constrtction of thermal power plants by private sector has its own charm, which needs to be fully enjoyed. This golden goose must be kept alive.

KESC was not allowed to enhance its generation capacity during the nineties, inspite of the best efforts by their management then.

Substantial work in upgrading the network has been done since year 2004 and its present management is working towards enhancing the inhouse generation capacity.

    I wish them success.

On the other hand, we the consumers also need to look into how we collectively behave! Do we not by pass our meters? Do we not draw load in excess of our contract [by adding airconditioners one after the other]. Do we not bribe KESC Electrician to look the other way? and last but not the least, how many of us pay the due taxes?

I do not work for KESC. I suffer power outages every day. But I am an engineer and have some knowledge how a Utility works.

Let each of us do our duty in paying for the services enjoyed by us and paying our taxes. Furthermore ensure that the taxes paid by us are spent 100% on the areas they are allocated to.Recommend
