LAHORE: Nomination papers of former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan were rejected on Tuesday by the NA-53 RO.

Ayesha Gulalai, who has floated an eponymous PTI faction, had her nomination papers for the same constituency rejected too.

Earlier, nomination papers of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) bigwigs Shehbaz Sharif and former speaker Ayaz Sadiq were approved. Sharif family scions Maryam Nawaz and Hamza Shehbaz also had their nomination papers accepted. Nomination papers of former railways minister Khawaja Saad Rafique stand cleared too.

Sadiq  and Shehbaz will contest from NA-133 and NA-132 respectively. Hamza, will also contest from the same constituency and vie from NA-124 against the PTI's Mansha Sindhu.

Nomination papers scrutiny ends today

Imran is also set to contest elections from Lahore's NA-131 after RO Akhtar Bhango approved his nomination. Earlier, the RO had summoned him in person to present an explanation. Imran will also contest from NA-243 in Karachi.

Nomination papers of 14 candidates including PML-N's Haji Malik and PTI's Mehar Wajid Azeem have been accepted from NA-123. PTI's Andaleeb Abbas, PPP's Zubair Kardar, PTI's Yasmeen Rashid and Aap Janab Sarkar Party's Nawab Ambar Shehzada, who has contested 41 elections in vain, also had their candidatures approved.

Musharraf's nomination papers rejected

Former president Pervez Musharraf's nomination papers for Chitral's NA-1 were rejected after the Supreme Court (SC) withdrew conditional permission earlier granted to the erstwhile military ruler. The apex court had earlier urged Musharraf to appear in connection with his disqualification case. The former president, however, was removed from a list of approved candidates after he failed to put in a court appearance.

RO rejects Sattar's NA-245 nomination papers

In Karachi, the nomination papers of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Farooq Sattar for NA-245 were rejected by the RO for failing to mention cases registered against him. The decision was based on a police report detailing various cases against Sattar. The document also went to add he had been declared an absconder. The pertinent RO also noted how Sattar had failed to mention another two FIRs against him.

Chaudhry Nisar rules out seat adjustment with PTI

On Monday, ROs nationwide continued scrutinising nominations. Imran's counsel Babar Awan presented a written reply to objections raised against the PTI chairman's nomination papers for Islamabad's NA-53. He also successfully moved an application on Khan being exempted from putting in a personal appearance.

Chaudhary Abdul Wahab Baloch of the PJDP, former Supreme Court chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry's party, challenged Khan’s nomination claiming the PTI chief had concealed family assets and sired a daughter out of wedlock.

In his reply, the PTI supremo termed the allegations a pack of lies. He said the complainant was only looking to slander and had produced fake documents on this account. Imran also urged the RO to take action against Baloch for bringing his name into disrepute.
