Polio Eradication: UNICEF, WHO aim to fight virus by 2012

UNICEF and WHO representatives visit parts of city to determine how to eradicate the disease in Pakistan by 2012.

KARACHI: Nations International Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organisation (WHO) representatives visited polio affected areas in Karachi on Tuesday to determine how they could eradicate the disease in Pakistan by 2012.

The two organisations are working within the Global Polio Partnership and with the federal and provincial governments to vaccinate every child in Pakistan against the highly contagious virus. Thirty-seven cases have been reported so far this year, while 18 cases were reported in 2010.

Eleven cases were reported in Sindh, 15 in FATA, eight in Baluchistan, and three in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
